One wonders what the escalation process looks like. Walz just mobilized the MN Nat'l Guard. Will Trump try to override that? Will the Guard obey, or split over it? And will he then try to invoke the insurrection act?
Fucking bonkers that we can even have this conversation with a straight face π€¦ββοΈ

Iβm donating as much as I can afford. We should all do what we can to support the good people of the Twin Cities, who didnβt ask to be made the front lines of a federal assault. Theyβre standing up all the same, and should be doing so with all of our help.

Dispatch from the occupation
What life is like in Minneapolis now
Please read @donmoyn.bsky.social's article, and share far and wide. I knew things were getting bad in the Twin Cities, but this seems much worse than anything weβve seen in LA or elsewhere.

Seriously? This banner is at the top of cms.gov (and I assume other federal sites right now).
Unless I'm missing something, this is a pretty obvious violation of the Hatch act, no?

"RIP H1B" scrawled across the bottom of the American Recipients of the Nobel Prize monument at the Museum of Natural History in NYC.
These six characters do a remarkably effective job of summarizing the massive self-inflicted wound our nation is engaging in.

Need yet more reasons to reduce the number of cars stuffed into our cities? Turns out the dark ones parked everywhere can easily increase the temperature in their vicinity by 3.8ΒΊC!
Cities must increasingly take heat into account in their design and rules, as they've always done historically.

Let's assume this interviewer doesn't have the disproof of this bald faced lie immediately at hand.
Then where's the follow-up where they do the legwork to validate or disprove her assertions, and air it in a prominent timeslot?
Otherwise it's not journalism, just a mouthpiece for the regime.

Fair point. We don't need more articles breathlessly hailing our glorious AI future; nor decrying all such systems as irredeemable, colossal boondoggles. Both sides' lack of nuance poisons the discourse.
Tech bros predicting mass unemployment, and AGI burning TWs of energy, aren't helping either π€¦

Is it really so difficult for us to hold two concepts in our minds simultaneously?
Yes, the SV hype machine has gone off the rails with AI and ethics.
And yes, ML/AI techniques can be incredibly useful in solving difficult problems. DeepMind's protein folding solution is a huge win for biology.

100% this.
Isolation, division, fear, and anger have played no small role in getting us to this point.
They won't be the tools that get us back on track. Except maybe a little anger, pointed in the right direction!

"The new curriculum was drafted by a review committee that includes Kevin Roberts, president of the Heritage Foundation."
Oh good. Now they're skipping the "put crazy people on school boards" step and just letting Heritage write out curricula.
What could possibly go wrong?

And for completeness, I do realize that we have to take the amortized energy cost of training into consideration to get a full accounting.
I'd love to get a transparent breakdown of this aspect as well, and where it's trending. E.g., are we spending more or less as we train newer/larger models?

Absolutely. There's so much borderline-religious zeal on both sides of the debate, losing science and engineering in the shuffle.
We need a lot fewer inflated claims derived from motivated reasoning, and a lot more data. This is why I applaud Google's openness here, even as I hope for more.

That doesn't seem crazy. I don't know where the state of the art in TPU power efficiency stands over most GPUs, but ~30% seems reasonable.

This is also why I hate it when Altman and Co go around telling everyone we're going to need terawatts of cheap power. We want model providers competing over efficiency, not just trying to scale up as though energy were free.

In a first, Google has released data on how much energy an AI prompt uses
Itβs the most transparent estimate yet from one of the big AI companies, and a long-awaited peek behind the curtain for researchers.
Very glad Google's releasing this data: a median Gemini query burns 0.24 Wh and 0.26 ml of water.
That's about 1s of microwave use, and 5 drops of water.
Yes, they should release more data, and queries can vary. But it's good to have some transparency.
