This is a very good encapsulation of how a lot of us feel about the impact of AI on a day to day basis which is that using it to find information can be more helpful than Google but a lot of that is because Google has gotten much worse

All I'm saying is Google had a vested interest in wrecking its magic search (people may have forgotten how insanely good it was, it was wizard level shit) because of how underwater they were on their AI investment and get you on to Gemini

Very excited for Chanda's new book to come out! I can't think of anybody who combines all the different kinds of expert knowledge she has - are there any other faculty in the country jointly appointed in physics and astronomy and women’s and gender studies? Her perspective is such a wonderful tonic.

This thread is very good, and additionally something I've been thinking about in the field is the dearth of fact checking. Books have the opportunity to do things right because of longer lead times, ask we should be using that to our advantage instead of blowing it off buttondown.com/signs+wonder...

Or, from the vantage point of science & medicine, do we really want to return to the era where rich racist men of leisure get to invent medical knowledge or do testing on marginalized people simply bc they can? That seems, idk, bad. Historically, it has been nothing short of devastating.

I & a lot of folks in my field studying the impact of white supremacy & liberation movements in the U.S. are currently facing the (potential) complete eradication of our funding. What do you think that means for our collective ability to understand & counter the threats we face?

And as the quoted thread makes clear, that research labor is (& should be) repackaged in a variety of ways to amply its impact. But guess what? If we allow this work to be defunded & suppressed, the opportunity to communicate its importance to wider audiences immediately vanishes.

One thing we should be taking away from the fascist crisis is that careful research on the real world is extremely fucking important. Bare minimum that work needs to be funded & expanded for us to have the information & tools necessary to cast off this regime & create a livable world from its ashes.
