Black and white photo of Jesse Jackson, taken by Don Carl Stefan in 1972. It is a head and shoulders shot of Jackson, arms crossed and looking over his left shoulder and st something off frame to his left. Jackson here is a young, black man dressed in a dark, collared shirt, light vest. He has a medium-length Afro and a mustache. He is sporting a button that reads “Ingreso adecuado ahora” which means adequate income now.
Friends — did you know that Jesse Jackson was a speaker at the 1st National Conference on Minority Participation in Earth Sciences?
This 1972 USGS event sparked a lot of great work before R’s decided to shut it down. I was surprised when I learned of his participation-maybe you are too.

This is figure 4, which shows terrestrial analog of Venusian lava tubes.
The existence of lava tubes on Venus has long been hypothesized, but never confirmed. A paper in Nature Communications proposes the presence of a lava tube in the Nyx Mons region. go.nature.com/4kwxJ20 🔭 🧪

I don’t know how to describe this - a map of Australia with a random mix of states mapped out. They are in the wrong place with the wrong boundaries and a few random US states thrown in. WA has obviously paid some protection money to get the exactly correct spelling and location on the map …
For all of you worrying that AI will outsmart us, here is some comfort (probably short lived though).
I like to draw fish (suspect i'm better at that than horses but . . . )

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.
Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
It's an important time to learn about the monitoring of nuclear testing. Here is an article by @scienceanu.bsky.social colleague, Hrvoje Tkalčić: theconversation.com/in-the-austr...

I wrote this some time ago - with all of us knowing this day would come, and Rob, of course, fighting like the bloody-minded bastard he was to the very end. He irrevocably changed my life - and how our country saw itself. www.theguardian.com/music/2026/j...

Christmas nectarines - small but beautifully sweet. Delivered right to the door by Mother Earth 🌍 !
It all started in 1955 with a misprint in a Colorado newspaper and a call to Col. Harry Shoup's secret military hotline. Shoup played along with the tiny voice who called, and a tradition was born.

Happy thanksgiving to all my US friends. Here is another thing to be thankful about: you are not required to eat one of these weird looking turkey-adjacent fowls.
