A £128 million vision to regenerate an “inaccessible and bleak” corner of Newcastle with new homes, shops, a multi-storey car park, and an urban park on a disused railway yard near Central Station has been submitted to city officials.

📍North of Pottery Lane, Forth Goods Yard, Newcastle.

Yeah. Certainly better than a few years back when it was a major traffic sewer.

Hopefully when/if the ‘Old Town Hall Quarter’ is developed with housing, the additional footfall/residents will attract further business.

The 7 vacant railway arches at Askew Road are currently receiving a makeover by a local mural & graffiti artist, to improve the public realm.
It’s part of plans to turn the area into a space for pop up food stalls, performances & outdoor workshops, year round, to increase footfall.

The Swing Bridge has costly mechanical issues, but can’t the graffiti be kept at bay in the meantime?
It celebrates its 150th anniversary in June.

A Newcastle city guide has said, “it is a source of embarrassment when I lead my domestic & foreign guests down to the Quayside”.

On this unassuming side street in Shieldfield lies two pieces of infrastructure most passersby don’t notice.
Firstly, an abandoned slip road on to Central Motorway East (aka the CME).
And secondly, a Metro line between Jesmond & Manors that passengers don’t travel along.

Improvement works continue at Grainger Market, inc. new automatic doors, wayfinding signage & tiling, hand painted numbering to wooden doors, new backlit signs above each entrance, new flooring & units in the main hall, and seating/planters on Nelson St.

a tweet reply from Northumberland County Council reading:
"The platform numbering won't be changing at Northumberland Park as it's two separate systems and there's a similar situation with the rail and Metro interchange at Heworth where both systems have platforms 1 & 2 on each station"

How long before both Northumberland Park and Heworth stations have their platform numbering corrected to create a single coherent interchange at each?

If we can get this tweet viral I'd say we can get it done in a month.

Around 40 trees have been planted along the former eastbound carriageway of Askew Road, with shrubs/plants to follow.

This, & the pedestrian crossing which replaced the awful concrete footbridge will make for a more pleasant environment ahead of the new housing east of Redheugh.

The 2 apartment blocks by Olympian Homes, south of Pottery Lane, are really coming along now.

After decades of standing dormant, it’s great to see development, (and plans for further), on these vast swathes of brownfield wasteland as you enter Newcastle from the south. 🏗️

Further work to the model Tyne Bridge, on the New Bridge Street/CME roundabout.
The river is being added below it.

Still think it could’ve been far better appreciated at Barras Bridge/Haymarket (3rd pic) or in Exhibition or Leazes Park for example.

The festoon lanterns on Newcastle’s Stowell Street, Chinatown, weren’t restored in time for last year’s Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations, and now looking unlikely they’ll be restored for this year’s celebrations either. 😔

Great news but minor gripe, the new National Rail platform will be numbered…
1, (instead of 3). 😣

This is because it’s *technically* a different station to Metro’s Northumberland Park, adjacent.
Of course to Joe Public it’ll be all one station, with platforms oddly numbered 1, 1 , & 2. 🤦

Something a bit different yesterday. I went along to Go North East’s launch event for their new batch of fully electric buses.
These 29 brand-new EVs will allow another 3 of their routes to transition to smoother, quieter, and greener electric operation.

I really hope when our buses are brought back under public control & unified they receive Calvert ‘B for Buses’ branding, so they look cohesive & integrated with the rest of the region’s transport.

We cannot lose these unique visual identifiers, designed by the legendary Margaret Calvert!
