people have been lied to about this. the GOP, the NYT, and sundry centrists have spread this bullshit story where kids are being bum rushed into surgery by a shadowy conspiracy of endocrinologists and gender ideologues
I don't know about you, but if I were a tech company or a policymaker, I would read that response as a warningβpeople are tired of having for-profit technologies that corrode their lives and communities rammed down their throats against their will. And some are willing to destroy them.
Front page of Chicago Sun-Times special section on the Rev. Jesse Jackson, showing an image of Jackson and the headline "He Was Somebody."
The Sun-Times and WBEZ have published about 20 stories and audio pieces this week about the Rev. Jesse Jackson, showing how his civil rights work intersected with film, education, Chicago mayors and much more. So, here's an ICYMI thread with some highlights. π§΅
Today's print Chicago Sun-Times is wrapped with a 20-page special section on the death of the Rev. Jesse Jackson. Here's where to look for the paper. www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/v...
All right. Itβs been over a year of slogging through these grocery price checks here in Chicago, and this is what I found:

A child drawing of a female scientist. The hedline is: What does a scientist look like? Children are drawing women more than ever before
When asked to draw a scientist, school-age kids in the United States are increasingly sketching women, according to a study from 2018.

Court battle over surveillance footage at the Broadview ICE detention center reaches new levels of kafkaesque absurdity: The DOJ claimed it *couldn't afford* hard drives to put video footage on. Plaintiffs bought THE US GOVERNMENT hard drives. ICE "lost" them.

Currently living off hearing tears of people who are mad that the halftime show wasn't subtitled, but mock ASL interpreters and call closed captions a distraction. Meanwhile, live captions always suck and none of the commercials had captions this year either.

Campus leaders say they donβt police βThe Rockβ unless the content is threatening or profane. The decisionΒ has some students and faculty questioningΒ what administrators view as threatening and whom they see as worthy of protection.
A lot of people cannot just start a paid newsletter or become freelancers to sustain their careers. The sports, metro, and international desks did work that requires *team* resources, like legal checks, documents, access to archives, and long-term beat experience.
There I fixed it
There needs to be a serious conversation in the pro-democracy movement about what the rise of AI chatbots means for the integrity of public opinion research and our polling and data ecosystem (h/t @tbonier.bsky.social).

If you are trans and DO receive a takedown letter from any federal agency (note: we do not have any confirmed examples of this happening yet), please
1. Call the National Lawyers Guild
2. Don't post about it until you do (1), & get informed about the potential consequences of posting about it.
The detention of a Guild member in Minnesota amidst the chaos created by DHS is heartbreaking and infuriating. My heart goes out to his family, who are now without their father and husband.
The feds have filed 31 criminal cases β not counting immigration-related offenses β stemming from Operation Midway Blitz.
Zero convictions so far.
Charges have been dropped in 14 cases already.
And theyβre having trouble keeping this case intact chicago.suntimes.com/immigration/...

Local followers, has anyone seen or they themselves have outdoor displays that showcase your or your neighbors rabid devotion to the Chicago Bears especially in this historic playoff run?

NEW: Border Patrol agents used Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses and a plainclothes videographer to covertly record protesters and arrests in Evanston, I found.
It's "disturbing," @epic.org told me.
Also @stopspyingny.bsky.social, @eff.org, @aclu.org of Illinois.
And this is my related question:
Why do the newsmedia & journalism have no memory?
I am struggling with what might be a generational experience. The gulf war was pretty politically formative for me. Itβs not history so much as memory this time.
It is destabilizing to see almost the exact same gameplan but this time without the guardrails that at the time I took for granted.
Resolve in 2025 to knit backwards except it ends up looking like crochet and also the needles don't look like any knitting needles you've ever seen.
Or, gee, IDK, learn a HANDICRAFT from actual HUMANS who have HANDS instead of genAI.

My new year's resolution this year, as every year, is to be a more available, supportive friend as well as an increasingly looming, formidable enemy.
