What an odd thing to happen.
Almost 10,000 authors have come together to publish an empty book protesting the theft of books by tech companies to train AI models.
Titled Donβt Steal This Book, it is empty of text except the names of the authors involved.. π§΅
I've been warning people for 4 years that gen-ai is going to create a huge vigilance problem. It's actually *worse* to make occasional subtle errors than it is to make lots of obvious errors.
FWIW - I have been regularly using Gemini, ChatGPT and a few others to 'ghost' tasks I'm doing, eg, figuring out emissions intensity of a gas turbine or something myself and then asking the same once I know the real answer
It's remarkable how subtle the errors, false references and mistakes are
What about in 2026? π
yeah sounds like everything is fine and there's no chance of continued shipping disruptions or additional conflict
good work everyone we're done here we can all go home
As an IR professor, it's depressing that this is outperforming all others as the best theory of US foreign policy
The reason the middle-class media has not reported Hannah Spencer being attacked by right-wing transphobes is that it needs to preserve the nice, coffeee-round-the-kitchen-table, middle-class view of transphobia, not the thuggish fascist reality.
So, when you use LLMs as thinking machines, you will run into variants of a core problem: It isn't reasoning. It's just a fancy bot that copy & pastes then rewords data written by humans. Which means:
1. It's implicitly capped by its human produced-training data, which is largely garbage.
7/?
If LLMs were reasoning, they would be inordinately seeking corrections and better data, especially better metadata. They are not curious problem solvers, or making inferences in reason; they are correlation machines spitting out sycophantic lorem ipsum probabilities about other people's work.
The AI bros (who clearly don't understand AI) in the comments are hilarious. "ask stupid questions, get stupid answers". LLMs have no concept of how intelligent a question is, and they certainly were not designed to deliberately give stupid responses if they deem your question too stupid. 1/?

Itβs almost like the UKβs right-wing press doesnβt actually reflect public opinion but instead the fevered imaginations of a very small group of sociopaths.
cannot stress enough that "separate the art from the artist" was meant for private individuals reconciling the art they love with its flawed creators and not meant for the ceo of a company driving a dump truck of money up to a bigot's front porch

the only thing the markets love more than Elon Says Thing is Trump Says Thing, in case you ever thought "rational" and "markets" belonged in the same sentence
When Massachusetts passed a "millionaires tax" in 2023, conservatives claimed the rich would flee.
But two years later, they haven't β and MA has collected $5.7B for infrastructure and public education.
A reminder that positive change can still happen at the state level.
"hey Claude, I thought you said this would be HIPAA compliant."
"You're right. I said that. I made it up. I take responsibility. Blah blah"
"Okay, so you're liable for damages now, right?"
"Haha! This service is just for fun. You're still on the hook if you take me seriously."
Not to keep beating the same personal dead horse, but one of my worries is LLMs *can* do everything, if your definition of that includes "doing them like an ethically compromised incompetent facing no accountability," and some proponents seem to be okay lowering everything to that standard.
The Tories oversaw the degradation of UK gas storage capacity - 2010 to 2017.
Thatcher privatised the gas and oil industry - 1982 to 1986.
Thatcher closed the collieries - 1986 to 1991.
This woman is an idiot - 1960 to 2026
holy shit
Crude oil prices, showing a very sharp increase in the last day, from around 65 to 101 dollars per barrel..
Oil prices wouldn't be all over the news today if more of our economy was powered by local, secure renewable energy.
This isn't an "energy crisis". It's a fossil fuel crisis.
44% of UK electricity came from renewables in 2025. More of that plus an electrified economy => no more oil shocks.
Ha ha haaaaa....
Never, ever, forget that ALL THIS started when Boris Johnson, too lazy to do his actual job as the Telegraph Brussels Correspondent, decided to make up amusing little tales about straight bananas and banned sausages...

TRANSCRIPT OF CARTOON This cartoon has four panels. PANEL 1 A man in a yellow shirt is at a bus stop, cheerfully lecturing the other two people at the stop. MAN: "Feminization" has warped society. If we lived as nature intended I'd be the alpha wolf! PANEL 2 The man with a huge thought balloon, showing him imagining walking with one hand holding a bloody axe and the other around a woman's waist. A second woman, in a maid outfit, is carrying a tray of cake and steak. A third woman looks at him adoringly. MAN: And the alpha wolf gets the first pick of everything! The best food, the best mates! PANEL 3 MAN: That's how men should live. I wish I was a wolf in the wild! PANEL 4 Inside a wolf den, two adult wolves are talking. There are four kids (three small puppies, one medium sized) and a dead rabbit. CAPTION: Wolves in the Wild DAD WOLF: First the little ones eat, then the rest of us will. MOM WOLF: And then -- cuddle pile! PUPPY: Yay! CHICKEN FAT WATCH "Chicken fat" is an archaic cartoonists' term for unimportant little details in the art. PANEL 1 - The tattoo is of a German cartoon mouse named Diddl, holding a heart. A poster says "HEY YOU! READ THIS! Wow, I can't believe you're reading this just because I said to." Another poster shows a cool woman in sunglasses holding a guitar. Text says "YET ANOTHER BAND... you're not cool enough to know." A pigeon standing on the sidewalk is wearing sunglasses and smoking a cigarette. PANEL 3 - A poster has a picture of the panel 1 pigeon, with the caption "BEWARE Bad Pigeon." The guy waiting at the bus stop is miming shooting himself in the head so he doesn't have to listen to this alpha wolf prattle any more. The woman's tattoo now shows the character Superjhemp (a parody of Superman and other superheroes). He's very popular in Luxembourg - "he has appeared in over 29 graphic novels that have the highest sales rate for Luxembourgish publications."

It is true that Proton is located in Switzerland and responded to a legal request from the Swiss authorities. But it is also true that most people do not know what an MLAT is and there is a widespread misunderstanding that using Proton will protect your account from US govt requests.
it really speaks to the corrosive nature of this stuff, too - like, the rules are there for a reason, it is good for us to follow them, and it also feels stupid and pointless even if you know theyβre good rules because the idea that theyβre being applied evenly is such obvious horseshit
"The limitations of this approach are obvious when looking at this malware fleet. We observed an instance where a basic Go binary was deployed to steal browser credentials, but developers left a template placeholder where the command and control URL should have been."
