Saw a repo called learning-opportunities. Yeah, we used to have opportunities to learn things. What happened?

Scheduled time to learn things again because practice what you want to do.

Ref'd a Mean Girls "On Wednesdays We Wear Pink" in the invite; it was on Wed.

Accident: "We" was the keyword.

This week I set up a weekly "On Wednesdays We Learn Things" with a peer.

1 of us info dumps on a topic for ~15m.

Shows a repo where they are currently applying it for ~15m.

The other selects a code block and takes a learning-opportunities quiz about it at the end.

We both learned things!

I'm at a VC-owned fintech. High pressure to AI-everything. "Lines of code merged by an LLM" a metric used in comp conversations for software engineers this year, those scoring low are managed out.

As recently as a year ago I remember doing things like pairing, learning, knowledge sharing.

Tech companies are completely rewriting their expectations of how their employees work and collaborate by pushing these AI tools so hard. I see many unintentional consequences. I think we need more psychologists, human factors folks in the mix.

GitHub - DrCatHicks/learning-opportunities: A Claude Code skill for deliberate skill development during AI-assisted coding A Claude Code skill for deliberate skill development during AI-assisted coding - DrCatHicks/learning-opportunities

Trying to reclaim some time for learning and sharing knowledge from the relentless VC-owned-company push for AI-everything-all-the-time.

I tried out github.com/DrCatHicks/l... this week. This is great! Thanks @grimalkina.bsky.social.

The problem is many of us don't see a lack of racism as an access need for Black people.

Democrats hold a trifecta. They quickly pass one electoral/judicial reform after another to ensure that the radical right wing MAGA will never regain power again.

Equipoise, a new Yglesias/Thiel consulting group, makes a pitch. We can grow the party by appealing to real working class Americans...

As his last official act, President Trump proposes the Agentic Stabilization Program. Democrats in Congress round up the votes for loan guarantees for great American companies like Anthropic and Palantir and save the economy. He signs it into law -- Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Blessed/Cursed future timeline.

The Democrats ride a wave of anger to huge victories in both houses in the midterms.

It's September 2028. OpenAI declares bankruptcy, triggering a stock market crash and bank runs.

VP Harris leads the Vance/Asmodeus ticket by 8 in the polls.

Also Sam Altman, probably:

"Think of how much energy humans expend procreating to create offspring. So inefficient. Couldn't be me"

These guys are such losers

Worker activism in tech is back. It's starting with opposition to ICE, but I think it will spill over into other areas.

This thread will share what's happened recently and what I think might be next. As well as ways for folks to get involved if they want to.

Should we all like it because we all like factual statements so much?

I have seen more, not "lacking in basic knowledge", but more "no longer convinced of the value of knowing things" from leadership roles. Seems like the more time a role spends in meetings with other leaders and talking to sycophantic chat interfaces, they've lost the ability to accept being told no.

We froze US-based hiring and essentially froze promotions as well, and slowly been pruning with layoffs for a few years. So we have very skilled, probably overqualified even teams. But their incentives from management have shifted. They just don't care about the same things they did 2y ago.

In the last few years was the first time I recall interviewing folks who clearly fully relied on an LLM to complete a brief take-home code interview. They turned in a fine bit of code but could not answer any questions about it.

I don't think I've worked with many software engineers who lack skills

You owe it to yourself.

Ah shit! We let pedophiles decide our beauty standards. Post the release of the harrowing Epstein files, and the powerful men in media and fashion, considered possible accomplices, it feels fair to say this with more gusto!

*abstract* ethical concerns feels key here. At the local level, might be room to push on *specific* concerns. Copyright. Language "Org XYZ will not use software tools that do not respect copyright". Call it the anti-piracy amendment or something.

Suddenly your local library only uses open models

The US is not the only regulator. The yearly investment in LLM infrastructure buildout is a massive bet on scaling. Would regulation from a civilized country or countries be enough to deter the relentless capex?

18.02.2026 02:24 ๐Ÿ‘ 0 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Does

"In the United States, we will not likely see meaningful regulation that will stop LLM adoption"

(probably true, anytime soon) necessarily imply

"social tactics have to be about affirmative reinforcement of alternatives or aspirations that people can make instead"?

Some dudes would rather

privatize all the water /
create a sycophantic digital girlfriend /
buy all the compute hardware we are capable of producing

Than

write one! piece of documentation /
talk to other people like equals /
go to therapy
