What if the Ferryman made a roguelike?

Haven't posted in a while! progress update on my #playdate game - this has turned into a fairly cursed raycaster, now with limited support for transparent walls! Loooot of optimizations to keep the FPS >20 on the playdate - lot of tricks & switched most the hot path code to fixed point math!
It's the 1st Anniversary of Echo: The Oracle's Scroll, my first real game after nearly a decade in the industry!
So I'm gonna write a bit about how I got into games :D (It's a tad naval-gazing so I apologise) + I'll talk about how much it made and what's next!

Sublevel Zero is 10, and we've got loads of news. 90% off, development footage, playable pre-release builds, a retrospective art book and... maybe a sequel?
We're really excited about it all, so please check it out and share! store.steampowered.com/news/app/327... #6dof #indiegame #roguelike
Love this!
...How much of the 16MB ram are you using to store all the sprites you might need for the current fight? ๐ That's gotta be a decent amount of memory to keep things looking soooo fluid!!
Cranky doors for my #playdate game!
*slight flickering warning!
haha can't mess up my gif compression if i post a real video right
At develop! Say hiii (rip my hair)
Testing if this is any better with a static cam & preconverted gif
dang! 30 fps with floors & ceilings AND lighting too?? was that on the hardware, not simulator?? and at full resolution?
if so damn! do you have any screenshots / videos of it? ๐
Yeah, doing that and a few other tricks, the wall rendering is super fast!
I've not found a nice way to get the floor / ceiling rendering anywhere near as fast though, since the memory reads there aren't very cache friendly :(
wow the bluesky compression really didn't like the heavy noise on this one huh?
playdate has a black & white screen so I make heavy use of blue noise for dithering to get a greyscale feel ๐
Been working on a little wolfenstein-3d style raycaster for the Playdate (168Mhz CPU, 16mb ram!) for a fun little side project, it's starting to come along okay!
Trying to keep a good framerate on the actual hardware is rough though! Been learning a bunch about programming and optimizing C!
Thanks for the kind words! Glad the level transitions & polish stands out ๐คฉ We put a lot of work into them!
big pharma sus
We got Best Puzzle
The sunset tunnel moment from the game Journey, where the player slides from right to left past columns throwing shadows towards the camera. The bright glowing sun sets behind the distant mountain. The scene is tinted in glowing warm shades.
This is a black and white texture I hand painted to map shadows into the downhill scene in the game Journey. Most games generate these textures automatically, but I did it by hand because we did not have the tools to do so during Journey's development.
A close up of my hand painted shadow texture, showing that the shadows of the columns in the sunset tunnel were aligned with the pixels of the texture to achieve maximum sharpness in game, despite the resolution of the texture being very small for the amount of area it was covering.
Funny story: Journey had no automatic shadows. I painted them all by hand. The shadow texture was not hi-res. To get the iconic sunset columns to cast sharp shadows, I made sure that they aligned with the pixel grid of the texture. Here you can see the shadow map I painted.
deserved!! congrats :D
Ah, this one! skyfollowerbridge.com (chrome/firefox extension links there)
Takes a bit of manual effort to skim through the results so probably not great when you're following a huge amount of people! (It gets a decent amount wrong but it's pretty obvious when it's right)
Went through the twitter > Bluesky Bridge extension today and there's a LOT more people than when I last tried! Hopefully people will actually start posting mainly here now ๐
More and more, follows for the last few days, looks a LARGE amount of people are finally leaving the hell bird site ๐
(OK I know I never post on here but I don't post on either now ๐)
pet peeve: mobile apps that use the spinners for date of birth inputs, so i have to keep spin the year back from the current date and feel my body decay as i attempt to reach my year of birth ๐ญ
just let me type a year
Goodbye shitty old year, hello shitty new year!
