My crankiest belief is that we are now being sold on solutions to problems which only exist because we've let others convince us they exist. That is what "innovation" seems to be in 2025.
There's a level of introspection that's just not happening these days re: what actually needs to bother us.
To add, elderly and disabled stand to benefit most from clear sidewalks. I’ll be fine putting on boots and trudging over the snow mounds, but less mobile just can’t.
Also always an option to pay someone to do the things you can’t. A large portion of elderly/disabled aren’t mowing their own lawns, painting their houses, or cleaning their own gutters. Not sure why we think about snow removal differently than other homeowner responsibilities 🤷♂️
Isn’t there something the city can do besides beg? Every winter we get proof that begging doesn’t help. Let’s start contracting out the clearing of these sidewalks after 24 hours, charged back to the business owners at a rate where we make some profit.
According to google maps, walking to the nearest marked crosswalk (Sterling) would add 42 minutes to crossing the street here. And of course there are no sidewalks on either side of the street. No way anyone could expect someone to reasonably do this
Strange how “maybe we could make it safer to bike” is somehow translated into Every trip across the planet must be made by bike by everyone in every situation.
Thought I might learn something new about promoting biking as a travel mode for everyone as part of my vacation in Paris. Nope, it’s simple. All it takes is protected lanes and lots of bike parking. The key is what I’ve thought all along: leaders fierce enough to make the change a priority.
