That's so cool!!

Very interesting! The exact same verb exists in Emirati/Qatari Arabic to mean close/shutdown ... however, I'm not sure about the etymology of the root in this case.

I've had it once. It's not as bad as I thought it would be.
The first thing that comes to mind is دربكة /darabukka/ .. it is technically a small drum 🥁

ACL Rolling Review (@aclrollingreview.bsky.social) is looking for a Co-CTO. To qualify, you should have served at least as an ACL AC before and have published at *ACL venues, as well as being proficient in Python and other relevant tech. If that's you, please apply: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...
Sounds very interesting! I'd like to read more about it at some point.
Before seeing you reconstruction, I just assumed it was the diminutive form of /da:n/ and the got feminized. Of course this is assuming that /dawe:ntī/ is 'my ear' singular.
Like how in some dialects you get /3e:nte:n/ "two eyes".
Also, you have عوينات in Lebanese Arabic meaning glasses.
It makes sense, because /qulla/ is also found in Classical Arabic in many contexts. Ibn Manzour in Lisan Al-Arab says it could be anything from a large pot to a small cup: tafsir.app/lisan/%D9%82...
In Sudanese Arabic, it is gulla. Is it the same reanalysis? /ʔ/ -> /q/ -> /g/. In Sudanese Arabic /q/ is either /g/ or /k/ (new MSA words with /q/ has a different sound)

As a reminder, reviewers deemed "highly irresponsible" will not be able to commit their work to EMNLP, as per the updated ARR policy: aclrollingreview.org/incentives2025
If you are an AC for this ARR cycle (May, 2025), or you volunteered as an emergency AC and have the capacity to AC a paper or two for the "Resources and Evaluation" track, please let me know and send me your OpenReview ID. YOUR HELP IS VALUED! 🫶
I'm looking for a reviewer for a paper on measuring syntactic productivity (lots of maths!) due a week from now. Please shoot me an email if you could review!

Would it kill if there is just *one* social event at our conferences with no alcohol? News flash: you don't need alcohol to talk to people ... Those events are either alienating or extremely uncomfortable for a good number of participants.
Respectfully, the *no alcohol* table solution ain't it.
