I didnβt know you once had Steven Frank hair!
I think youβre missing a lot of context for my original post if you think my point was to show how powerful the A18 Pro is. Not your fault, but youβre barking up the wrong tree.
And you can absolutely do "3D rendering, video editing, code compiling" on a MacBook Neo. It will probably perform similarly to an M1 in most tasks. And it will also probably be faster than any Intel Mac ever sold, all of which did "3D rendering, video editing, code compiling," if you remember.
Your first reply said this: "That A18 isn't suitable for the kinds of workloads that the M-class processors made for."
I think it should have said, "That A18 isn't as fast as an M2 or better in multi-core tasks." I would have agreed with that. But that's not what you said.
I was comparing to M1 only, because you said βM-classβ and not any specific chip.
As for βperformance in short bursts,β have you benchmarked the MacBook Neo? I suspect it has very different cooling characteristics than an iPhone.
And, no, itβs not the same thing as I said in my original post because I was responding to your post. In particular, I was rebutting your assertion that βmulti-core is a whole different ball game.β Thatβs why I provided information about multi-core performance.
Geekbench scores vary by a percent or two in each run. The numbers I looked up had the A18 Pro 1% faster in multi-core. (8,531 vs. 8,441) But my point stands: βnot suitable for the same kinds of workloads as the M-class processorsβ is not a fair characterization.
The A18 Pro is also faster than the M1 in multi-core performance.

I'm teaching about early 20th century eugenics today and was reminded that 9 years ago Republican Representative Steve King was stripped of his committee assignments by his GOP colleagues for this post that simply states what is now bog standard GOP policy/rhetoric on immigration and "civilization."
The A18 Pro in the MacBook Neo is 19% faster than the M2 Ultra in the Mac Pro in single-core performance (Geekbench 6).
The MacBook Neo starts at $599.
The Mac Pro, which is still for sale, starts at $6,999.
I do that all the time, and my dog ignores it. But open the peanut butter jar and she comes from across the house. Priorities.

There's an in-person event tomorrow, where presumably people will get hands-on time with the new, low-cost MacBook Neo.
Maybe in a future episode. There's a lot to cover this week!
