But generally it was only when my mom was aware that I was exposed to or affected by a racial issue, but there was rarely a preemptive introduction to racism.

OR she would see me doing something that would probably be fine for any other kid, but could have a bad outcome for a Black kid. Like when I was playing with a realistic-looking toy gun outside (and this was more than a decade before Tamir Rice).
As far as I can recollect, the βvisceral hateβ was always introduced by someone else (peer, teacher, stranger, etc), and my mother would give me the historical context to understand and then coach me on how I should react.
The war and genocide circles overlap quite a bit in practice and, in most wars, genocide occurs especially when there is an imbalance of military power, and guess who has the most well-funded and powerful military.
Thereβs a case for war crimes and genocide in every American conflict since WW2.
Depends on if you pay attention to how funding cuts and government shutdowns affect your local/state services.

I don't care if Congress authorizes War on Iran. NO WAR ON IRAN. I want people to fucking reclaim their morality.
Today's quick update [Mar 1]:
- Clashes between SAF and RSF following RSF attack on Dilling, South Kordofan.
- RSF drone strikes on ElObeid, North Kordofan.

LET'S TALK ABOUT THE NATIVE AMERICAN GRAVES PROTECTION AND REPATRIATION ACT (NAGPRA): LONG BUT IMPORTANT AND MUCH SHORTER THAN WHAT I READ TO COMPILE IT π§΅
I'm going to speak some hard truths right now. It's going to hurt your feelings. You might feel defensive. You'll want to look away.
DON'T.
Thatβs what youβre missing. Iβm not assigning blame to him.
Also, agreed, BAFTA/BBC absolutely failed here and deserve all the blame.
However** and importantly, the people that continue to insist that a disabled person is at fault for something that is involuntary due to the disability are being ableist.
We should be able to apologize for an involuntary harm without being at fault for that harm in situations like this.
Iβm not sure thereβs really a way to avoid apologizing for the distress or harm caused by slurs when someone with Touretteβs is among strangers that assume that they have full agency/autonomy over their actions.
All you can do is explain and hope strangers understand youβre not at fault.
Yeah, could be, but I think Hanlonβs Razor seems more probable here due to how ableist institutions tend to neglect or lack consideration for disabled people.
Like Iβm sure there were seats close enough to the stage/cameras where BAFTA couldβve put together a one or two sheets of sound-insulating plexiglass between his area and the crowd mic if they didnβt just remove the mic.
I do definitely think BAFTA and the BBC are at fault. John Davidson is not. He did what he could to mitigate the harm by leaving (which should have been prevented by proper accommodations) and publicly acknowledged the harm even though it wasnβt his fault.
No, not disabilities, but I expect disabled (and abled) people to apologize for or acknowledge harm caused. Most conditions that cause involuntary harm to other people only remove fault, but those conditions usually donβt remove our ability to empathize with and care for those affected.
Once Iβm aware that Iβve unintentionally caused harm, I then have a moral responsibility to intentionally acknowledge or address the harm to resolve it (if I have the agency and autonomy to do so) even if my action was not of my volition.
Essentially. If Iβm in a space where it is not reasonably expected for me to involuntarily swing my arm/hand uncontrollably, and my arm/hand makes harmful impact, then my involuntary act would be the causation of a harmful result.
Iβm not sorry for existing, Iβm sorry for the harm I caused, even if I didnβt intend to cause it. Youβre conflating two different things and approaching that βsorry for existingβ territory on your own.
If I didnβt cause harm, I wouldnβt have anything to be sorry about.
I decided to be at a particular place at a particular time. I did not decide to strike someone, but because I decided to be there, I did because of a spasm.
Because my involuntary action was involved in the outcome.
E.g. If I have a spasm or tic that causes my hand to flail and I accidentally hit someone, I shouldnβt be culpable but I am responsible for the outcome and need to address or correct the harm caused.
We are morally responsible for our actions/inactions regardless of them being voluntary or involuntary.
Whether or not we are to blame or at fault (culpability) is a different argument involving intent, knowledge, awareness, etc.
NYC public libraries are some of the last places in the city where you can use the bathroom without purchasing anything. Again, we need city government to stop underfunding the libraries.
