I was at the airport waiting in line at the TSA check the moment Kristi Noem was fired. Her pre-recorded video message started glitching and then screaming at full volume. Everyone cowered and covered their ears and all the children were crying and trying to get away from the sound.

Off to Baltimore tomorrow. Today I will contemplate this unsightly object: the brutal sap once carried by my great great grandfather, a late nineteenth century Baltimore city beat cop

Fraught Connections: A Review of Mike Powell’s β€œNew Paltz, New Paltz” Early in Mike Powell’s slender debut novel, New Paltz, New Paltz, the protagonist establishes his affinity for escalators. β€œThat feeling of moving without moving,” he remarks, β€œLike how an angel migh…

any journals out there enticed by longish short stories that proceed, languorously, and with obsessive detail, to describe architectural peculiarities?

I love that a person in a shitty wizard beard and felt hat with a broken synthesizer is doing more creative and heartfelt work than any musician on the radio.

I'm not a huge fan of dungeon synth itself, but it's probably some of the most creative, free work that is being made right now.

It existentially resists commodification. It's more punk than punk.

Is it serious? Is it a joke? Yes.

Texas Dungeon Siege

Sometimes, when I'm feeling sad about the state of art in the world, I watch some videos on the Texas Dungeon Synth YT channel: www.youtube.com/@TexasDungeo...

It's a reminder that there are still weirdos out there dressing up making bare-bones, DIY art for their friends, just because they want to.

One thing you will never think after reading a great book or listening to a great album or seeing a great piece of art is, β€œI’m really glad this person remained cautious while they were making this and guarded against being perceived as weird.”

This looks to be a very cool and idiosyncratic horror video game. Love the visuals. Over 90% funded, 5 days left to get it across the finish line. Thanks @slimyswampghost.bsky.social for reporting and bringing it to my attention.

Driving on forest roads this morning, four inches of snow and slush on the ground, got directions from two naked wooks car camping in an Acura on the side of the road.

They were very friendly.

As the boom recedes, the concept of NFTs increasingly feels like something from a lost Borges story. Five elegantly written pages about a Buenos Aires grocer who owns the spring rain. (He can't control the rain, and it falls on everyone - but only the grocer somehow, ineffably, "owns" it.)

every shot-on-video, made-with-a-camcorder horror movie that's just some teenage friend group fucking around in the woods with some fake blood and a monster mask contains more artistic merit, human joy and creative light than anything AI has ever made or will ever, ever make
