The reason you so many of the most annoying Twitter Politics guys are sticking by Platner has nothing to do with the candidate or policy and more to do with the fact that they can never have been wrong. I was excited about him for a bit and now I am not. Very easy thing to say if you are normal.

Our tiny little website currently has the 4th-placed story on r/all, which is doing all kinds of weird and beautiful things to our monthly traffic (which doesn't normally operate at anywhere near that scale)

Amazing work from @nicolecarpenter.bsky.social, as always!

I’m glad someone said this to his face and more of these CEOs need to hear it: If the conversation around tech seems negative now it’s because you, your products, and what they’re doing to our society fucking sucks. You stopped making optimistic technology and unleashed MechaHitler the job killer.

Anyway it feels quite bad to be a subject matter expert in the White House’s lingua franca for murdering people

I also think that games just kind of require a long time to gain any fluency in, and arriving when they did in a time of rapidly proliferating mass media means you kind of have to pick a track as the dream of some kind of wider contextual understanding just slips further away.

Yeah I just think games have a rich tradition of isolating itself from the wider culture, which makes this dynamic far more acute to me.

I’m not making a moral panicky assertion about games and violence, rather that games criticism, in its fatigue over fending off moral panics, neglected to imagine a world for which video games became the only frame of reference for a generation. And what it would look like when they run things

I feel increasingly that games journalism offered a bunch of very trenchant critiques to this sort of thing happening but made the critical error of issuing the critique and moving on, and not reckoning the reality of what it meant to live alongside this. I include myself in this.

When the games already resemble gambling so closely this makes sense! Why not cut out the middleman

it is funny how β€œboots on the ground” is invoked here and in other hawkish punditry. symbolic of some fearsome masculine strength. like that one call of duty convention where they said it and the crowd cheered bc they were sick of sci fi and jet packs
