I also think that games just kind of require a long time to gain any fluency in, and arriving when they did in a time of rapidly proliferating mass media means you kind of have to pick a track as the dream of some kind of wider contextual understanding just slips further away.
Yeah I just think games have a rich tradition of isolating itself from the wider culture, which makes this dynamic far more acute to me.
I’m not making a moral panicky assertion about games and violence, rather that games criticism, in its fatigue over fending off moral panics, neglected to imagine a world for which video games became the only frame of reference for a generation. And what it would look like when they run things
I feel increasingly that games journalism offered a bunch of very trenchant critiques to this sort of thing happening but made the critical error of issuing the critique and moving on, and not reckoning the reality of what it meant to live alongside this. I include myself in this.
