I gotta tell you, long before the advent of AI, the expense of paying the writer was already, with very few exceptions, not a significant part of the cost equation. I think we’re just dealing with people who see the existence of humans as a problem to solve.

I just finished the audio book, which I highly recommend. It’s incredibly well done and brings some elements that reading just can’t.

I talked to dozens of experts in government, academia, cybersecurity, and industry about exactly this scenario last year and not only did not one of them think I was being alarmist, many brought it up unprompted and many said there was zero chance it hadn’t already happened

Today I watched a 3-year-old put his face into a bowl of dry Cheerios and eat them like my cat eats her kibble. Little kids are fascinating.

I didn't expect to retire when I did, but the bigger surprise is that I didn't expect retirement to be so mind-numbingly boring. And lonely. I'm sure my experience would be different if I had any money, which I absolutely do not. Anyway, today is the day I read books to preschoolers, so there's that

Well, this is an exciting development in our very sleepy, restaurant-deficient neighborhood.

Yesterday I bought a really nice, barely used Thule bike rack for a phenomenal price from a guy who is moving out of the US. As thrilled as I am about the acquisition of something I've needed for some time, I'm also envious of the seller in that he gets to leave the US at this particular time.

The incompetent, simple-minded atrocity in the White [Supremacy] House is ensuring that Americans will risk revenge killings for generations.

I don’t think Trump and his people are capable of engineering β€œdistractions,” I think the mind-numbing chaos we see every day is straightforwardly the result of giving the dumbest, cruelest, most corrupt, most selfish people of a generation near-unmitigated power

Cats to Blame for Octopus Deity Enshrinement Delay Hayasuhime Shrine in Oita prefecture is a rarity in Japan because it is dedicated to the octopus. When local sculptor Kousei Hashimoto was tasked with creating a new deity to be enshrined, he expected for it to be completed by the end of the year. But the neighborhood cats had different plans.

The perils of using cardboard for art:

"Hashimoto explained that, because the sculpture was made from cardboard, cats kept...using it as a scratching post...What's more, he would find cats sleeping with it in order to keep warm..."

I feel like it was around the same time that movie box office receipt numbers became part of the regular (not industry) news. It made me think, like why would the average American care how much money a movie made over the weekend?

Iran’s people were facing a horrible shortage of water before the war began. If we are destroying desalination plants and setting fire to Teheran we are committing unfathomable crimes.

There's something deeply obscene and broken about the fact that Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth are bombing elementary schools in an illegal war of aggression, and there's still a sense among the opposition that it has to be explained in terms of gas prices in order to get American voters to care.

I think about this all the time. And for faculty in good jobs it still has some of that β€” I do enjoy knowledge making. But those are so so few and everywhere else the academe is indentured labor to a loan shark.

I've worked with registered dieticians. Mine started by looking at what I was currently eating. From there, they outlined the macro adjustments I needed (protein, carbs, fiber) plus calorie targets. From there, we definitely talked about what I liked and how to make that work. It was never punitive.

There's a medical professional on social media who tracks Trump's dementia progression. He says that the low lighting is intentional so as not to overstimulate the patient. Persons with dementia are light sensitive, apparently. He explains it here. www.tiktok.com/@epistemiccr...

ICE has spun a massive surveillance web. We talked to people caught in it The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE and Border Patrol, is using a broad web of surveillance tools β€” purchased as its budget has ballooned under this administration β€” to monitor, apprehend and intimidate the people it seeks to deport and the U.S. citizens critical of its policies.

Hegseth and Stephen Miller ridiculed "rules of engagement" and vowed this war won't be "politically correct." Now it looks like we may have bombed an elementary school. Hegseth/Miller's certainty that their version of "strength" would have support is imploding. 3/

Lindsey Graham’s Quest to Sell Trump on Striking Iran Few others in the president’s ear argued for the attack as effectively as South Carolina’s senior senator.

If a US Senator wants the US to go to war against another country, he should introduce a war authorization and push for a vote in the US Congress.

Not subvert the Constitution to achieve that end.

so apparently Brian McGinnis has been denied access to both his family and legal representation since a sitting senator broke his arm
