Perry: This St. Patrickβs Day, donβt forget Irish musicβs anti-fascist roots
Dropkick Murphys, the iconic Irish American punk band, are headlining a free block party March 6 near where Alex Pretti was killed by immigration agents, contributing columnist David M. Perry writes.
NEW βWeβre celebrating a tradition that is at its core about resisting occupation and maintaining community in the face of horrors. You canβt keep politics out of Irish music. No one should try, for two reasons. First, itβs ahistorical. Second, Minnesotans are ready for a big anti-fascist party.β

I assigned this for my environmental problems seminar last week. I was happy with how it was received! It really helped the students visualize the kinds of change we want to talk about this spring.

Was driving my kids to school and the first thing on the radio was reporting about Trump's video depicting the Obamas as apes and I think many people still don't fully appreciate what it means to have to raise Black children in a country where the president is so brazenly and consistently racist

Long-Distance Trade in the Ancient World
This book presents a novel perspective on long-distance trade in the ancient world that integrates network theory and environmental analysis
"traditional Eurocentric perspectives .. have tended to focus primarily on empires & imperial agency as the dominant analytical category. [This book argues] instead that environmental factors played a much greater role in influencing the formation of trade routes." link.springer.com/book/10.1007...

Really glad i wrote the anti-dystopia essay before all this because I donβt think I could have taken myself seriously enough to do it now but it only feels more essential.
Dystopia limits our imaginations. Fantasy is not a retreat from reality. It is a rehearsal for a different one.

i think this is exactly right. fascism is the Death Drive as ideology. it's why the catastrophic end of the Nazi Party does not deter people from worshipping Nazis. that the Nazis destroyed Germany along with the rest of Europe is part of the appeal.

A bird is singing on a crabapple tree in winter. In the second panel we see the bird is an evening grosbeak who says "What a gorgeous day!". The following panel he says "Why can't every day be like this" And in the final panel looks very upset.

The bulk of the national discourse is focused on preventing white people from getting caught in the crosshairs of ICEβs violence.
And the reason that feels so crazymaking in Minnesota is because we were organizing before Renee Goodβs murder to protect people of color targeted by ICE.
