Other times I'll find a way of working that makes sense to me. This is difficult because I expect that work to be rejected or questioned and I'll have to prepare a defence for my approach without making it a direct challenge to the boss's authority.
I don't think there is one answer to that.
The problem is often not that there is no-one to explain it, but that the explanation and expectation make no sense to me.
Sometimes it is a matter of having the spoons to set aside correctness and do what is asked, no matter how silly.
I tend to mask it out. In email I'll write the detail then add a summary at the top. I'll ask for time to reply by email instead of continuing a conversation.
There have been times I've been asked to do something that doesn't make sense and I can be blocked for days or weeks.
I need some flexibility in how I approach problems.
If you ask a complex question I will give a detailed answer then I will give a simpler answer. I cannot start with a simple answer then go into detail.

It is an interesting tale. One distinction I'd point out is that compilers generally give repeatable results while an LLM can give different results to the same prompts. Among other things this makes testing, especially automated testing, almost impossible.
