I have used nitrile gloves and work very very cleanly. It's a horrible thing to deal with - I'm allergic to my paints but not sure which specific chemical[s].

I'm not a letterer (I do my own comics but by no means would I consider myself a professional at lettering at all) but imo it's ok so long as it remains legible! One of the reasons for caps iirc is they are more easily distinguished so makes it easier for dyslexic readers and such.
