Perhaps I'm misinterpreting the pronunciation of the Rihannsu word. I assure you that the Japanese word is pronounced by holding the "ee" sound of い half a beat or so longer, though.

I sympathize. There is a specific dish from the Chinese takeout restaurant across the street from where I worked in Baltimore in 2002-2005 that I've been craving for *years*, and I've never been able to reproduce it -- and it's no longer on their menu and it's been 20 years, so I can't ask.
