1. i agree with the author's theory - webviews has a bad rep because you don't notice the well-integrated ones

2. safari doesn't support svg displacement maps, the easiest way to implement glass and lensing effects on the web currently, but has this private css property to do almost the same thing

Apple has a private CSS property to add Liquid Glass effects to web content I have an incredibly boring summer hobby: looking at the changelog for the WebKit Github repo. Why? Because I spend a chunk of my professional life working with webviews inside mobile apps and I like…

interesting that apple added their own css property to use liquid glass in webviews, only in their own apps

It's iOS 26 release day today! To mark the occasion I did a lil' miniblog about a secret CSS property Apple made for themselves to use Liquid Glass effects on web content: alastair.is/apple-has-a-...

Comparison of window control buttons across Mac apps. There are 4 apps: Finder, WhatsApp, Discord, and LINE. Overlapping app windows show the position of the red, yellow, and green traffic-light buttons. Red vertical guide lines highlight that Finder, WhatsApp, and Discord align consistently, while LINE’s buttons are misaligned, spaced too tightly compared to others.

maybe line's mac app team has never used a mac before 🥀

the new safari in ios 26 isn’t too bad once you get used to it - it’s an extra tap for some actions but if you already know the swipe up from the address bar gesture to see all tabs, it’s pretty manageable

also worth mentioning you can take HDR screenshots now

just realised how ios 26 manages to add specular highlights to icons that are already white - they're using HDR so it can actually go beyond regular white

this whole experience reminded me that “newer” doesn’t automatically mean “better for your specific needs.” sometimes the older, more foundational tool gives you the freedom you need

💭 my takeaway: pick the tool based on what you need, not just what's new or familiar.

🧩 SwiftUI is more like building with only a React component library AND you have no way to see or edit its source - okay until you need something the authors didn’t anticipate, then you’re stuck, or need some elaborate workarounds

an analogy from my experience so far:

🛠️ UIKit feels like building with vanilla HTML/CSS/JS - almost complete control over positioning, styling, and behaviour. you can push design boundaries without fighting the framework, but you need to define them yourself

UIKit & SwiftUI logos

UIKit & SwiftUI logos

in an unexpected plot twist, i actually prefer UIKit over SwiftUI 🤯

i’ve been prototyping an iOS app to explore apple’s liquid glass. got started with SwiftUI cuz i thought as it’s declarative it’d be easier (from my web background). after hitting some walls, tried UIKit & was surprised i prefer it
