We heard you all like random cats, so here's our random cat of the day. Chosen uniformly at random with verifiable randomness from our quicknet VRF round 20993439 among all the 1 available cat to draw from.

No Peeking! How to Build a Sealed-Bid Auction with On-Chain Timelock Encryption

New blog post just dropped!
"No Peeking! How to Build a Sealed-Bid Auction with On-Chain Timelock Encryption", powered by threshold-cryptography like everything we do.

In any case, we hope you're starting off 2025 by hashing your data safely, and made sure to stay away from SHA-1! Don't forget to check our blog for more random content: drand.love/blog/2025/0...

We use hashes in our own VRF design in order to provide deterministic derivation paths from our verifiable random beacons to actual random numbers, and you can use the hash function you want for it, as long as its digests are uniformly distributed among all possible byte strings.

A few of the other things we asked ourselves include:
Is the prediction made in 2020 that a SHA-1 chosen-prefix attack would be costing less than $10,000 by 2025 actually true?
What if we could repurpose the bitcoin network to compute SHA-1 hashes?
How about supercomputers?

With the latest NVIDIA RTX 5090 having just been released, we wondered: how many do you need in order to find a SHA-1 collision, or worse, perform a chosen-prefix attack on SHA-1 in 2025?
The answer to that question and many more can be found in our blog: drand.love/blog/2025/0...

In our latest blog post, our very own smart contract engineer is telling you all about how to avoid on-chain gotchas when it comes to on-chain randomness usage! Check it out since randomness is too important to be left out to chance:
