Just heard the cord-card merger in the wild! βItβs gonna be t[a]rture!β said by a TSA agent, a woman perhaps in her late 50s. Despite local stereotypes, thatβs only my second time hearing it since moving to Utah 6 years ago.

Today in Applied Phonetics was sound symbolism and branding. So we chose a product and applied some techniques to come up with a new name. The class chose Praat. Here are some of their names:
Fon-e-talk
Talktics
Favewave
Respee
Comspeech
Soundfound
My favorites though were
Sonetix
Wavio

My course syllabi now contain a link to this document, "why Professor Holliday Doesn't Use Generative AI". Feel free to share/repurpose or just check out the links for your own reference. It won't stop some of them, but I want students to know why. docs.google.com/document/d/1...

What I'm worried about is that students are reading more AI-generated text than human-generated text. So that becomes their model. Which means when they go to write something, even if it's not AI-generated, it'll sound like it is because that's what they're used to reading.
A corpus of vocalists.

I said β6-7β to my 9yo and she said flatly, βitβs 2026. Thatβs not a thing anymore.β
The 2025 Word of the Year is "slop," both as a noun for low-quality AI-generated content and as a combining form for anything of little value. Read the full press release. #WOTY2025 #ADS2026 #LSA2026
