Two things let me brush off the SubStar thing:

1) These are very much the death rattles of an older generation and regime demanding fascism and authoritarianism through the lenses of hallucinated nostalgia in lieu of change

2) The knowledge this isn’t the first time, and won’t be the last time.

It’s been this way for decades. BlueSky will do the same thing, eventually. Tumblr did. LJ did. Yahoo did.

Until we legitimize adult content and sex work, until we own our spaces outright, it’ll remain a valuable tactic for creating a profitable social site or network.

Because it’s a well-known growth tactic for startups and social media sites:

1) Court the minority groups other sites ban (often queer, adult, and BIPOC)
2) Wait for ”acceptable” users to join, following their friends or creators
3) Ban the “unacceptable” groups and keep the rest
4) Profit

I guess if you’d rather do galleries via social messengers for whatever reason, I can also point you toward Threema and Signal instead of Telegram or WhatsApp. Yeah, encryption requires some OpSec on your part but both platforms are pretty swish.

But you still need a website. For you. That’s yours.

Tapping the sign again now, before content creators are booted off Discord before their IPO, or Telegram because of its UAE associations, or a furry site because of puriteens and payment processors.

BUILD. YOUR. OWN. SITE.

If you're an adult content creator who runs your own business separate from patron-based sites like Substar and Patreon, now is an excellent time to mentor others on how to successfully pivot into the same model.

Just saying we need more leaders out there.

The thing that sucks the hardest is for the folks who have made successful livings off subscription/patron content. Some of these creators clear several grand a month on a sustainable content schedule, making perfectly legal content.

*That* is what sucks.

I genuinely suspect it'll be a return to direct commission work and physical merch for a lot of folks for a spell. Strict invoice billing for services, not content; selling physical merch at cons; migrating to personal sites instead of subscription services.

This is going to suck.

Man, I knew it'd happen eventually, but I'm still disappointed nonetheless.

Get the fuck off Substar. Fuck if I know where to go short of rolling your own site and dealing with payment processors directly, though, most of whom won't touch adult content with a ten foot pole.

Learning to tell when an apology is sincere versus pretend or damage control is a critical skill for life.
