I'm so old that when I was a teenager there were still nine planets but only four flavors.
This is a long list, including:
* Marilynne Robinson, Housekeeping
* CJ Cherry's Arafel books
* NK Jemisin, The Broken Earth trilogy
* Edith Wharton, The House of Mirth
* Julian May, Saga of Pleistocene Exile
* Diana Wynne Jones, The Tough Guide to Fantasyland
* Ursula K Le Guin, The Dispossessed
I find present tense challenging, but I think it's mostly because past tense is such an ingrained habit.
In a current WIP I'm deliberately using present tense for flashback memories to point up the immersion in the remembered moment, with the main narrative in past tense.
'...we were forced to recognise the frailty of joy, normality, even of existence itself. Watching pictures on our newly rented first TV, beamed across the Atlantic by satellites set up for that growing industry, we watched President John Kennedy gunned down in a place called Dallas in America.'

Stop calling it βmoving to the centerβ when Democrats capitulate to the far right.
If Democrats wanted to βmove to the centerβ they would go left
It depends on the story.
For contemporary fiction, the present day is implied but deliberately left vague.
For a period piece like "Fontaigne's Folly", it's explicitly 1999.
For a secondary-world fantasy, I may specify according to the world's own timeline if it's important.

Ellyll grew up in an underground refuge for the outcasts of Liicataivan society. The first time he saw the sky, he was fourteen years old.
He has a deep phobia of open sky, feeling as though he would fall upward forever.

From a backburnered epic #fantasy, "The Halted Earth":
A fur-clad arm, radiating the chill of Night, reached over his shoulder. With an icy snap, the latch came free.
Dienem did not turn. Monsters his sons might be, but they were not kinslayers.

βLooks to be a beautiful day for a hike!β Janica hadnβt stopped beaming. Tristan smiled wistfully at her friend, then glanced in the direction of the rising sun. The sky was a beautiful soft pink behind the green trees.

Magda pointed at the pulsating massβtowards the faint, almost invisible darker line coursing from its midsection down towards where the misshapen organ met its supporting beams. Trunks. Veins. At that point, Samβs brain had stopped supplying her with helpful synonyms. After a few seconds of squinting to try and make out why exactly the girl thought that mattered, the faint fear lurking in her guts crystallised into certainty: not just a line, but a furrow, a seam that could come undone if given the slightest push. Which meant crossing the rotten field of flesh separating them from the thumping monstrosity.
"Beams" of sorts.

Context: same chapter as the one from yesterday's prompt. Sam and Magda are looking for an exit in the corrupted version of Thruxted Mill in the Obverse.
Black text, green background, no highlight It's totally possible-nah, the word is likely-that Mom likes my obnoxiously cheerful dead best friend more than she likes me. "Pass me the salt, Blake," she says, but it's already appeared, at least to her eyes, next to the stove. Ren has his ever-present smile already spread across his face, so when she says, "Thank you, Ren," he has no way of showing his joy except to get brighter, nearly blinding the only person in the room who can see him. Me. "Turn it down." It's the sort of thing I've always said, but instead of grumbling it, I kind of laugh instead. She's keeping him entertained, he's helping her out, they're both happy, and I'm free to escape to my room. How can I be annoyed by that?
Guys, Ren is a ghost who literally grows brighter when he smiles. And I love the word βbeam.β So youβd think I would have one instance in 3 books of Ren beaming
Youβd be wrong.
So hereβs him βbeamingβ at the beginning of book 3

From A Paranormal Bromance 3 π»π
Ava switched on her headlamp. The beam swerved left and right over the grass as she ran further. Suddenly, no grass anymore. She slammed on the breaks, but her momentum still carried her further towards the edge. At the last moment, her father's hands caught her and pulled her back to safety. βI got you,β he said. Ava's light shone down on the turbid water surface - she wouldn't have survived falling.
I cleverly omitted the part right before and right after, which would have been major spoilers.

I would be miserable. Winter weather is so dry
Ugh, allergies suck.
With all the warm weather and rain, the humidity in the house is ~50%, even without running any humidifiers, after months of 15-25%.
For the first time in ages, I'm feeling almost normal: eyes not burning, lips less chapped, clear sinuses, mouth not achingly dry.

We could end homelessness and hunger tomorrow if we wanted to.
We could agree that everyone should be fed and housed.
We could admit that being disabled, poor, homeless or unemployed is not a moral failing.
That society would be better off if everyoneβs basic needs were met.
