Function calls in AI are a bigger deal than most realize.
At some point, weβll use AI assistants instead of standalone software. We can already do a lot today.
I built an image processing app for ChatGPT - no UI, just pure function calls to a headless API service.

Weβve been promoting GRID for ChatGPT, bringing spreadsheets directly into ChatGPT.
Behind the scenes lies something bigger: a service that turns spreadsheets into REST APIs for developers to plug into their apps. Want to try it out? Sign up for waitlist here and mention API-access: grid.is/chat-gpt
Building SaaS like itβs been done the last 10β15 years? Rethink.
Software is entering the AI-first era: language-first, task-centric, agentic.
Users expect integration, automation, APIs and AIsβnot just UIs.
It's not a tweak; itβs a shift. Evolve or risk obsolescence.
I see businesses moving their workflows AI-firstβusing LLMs to automate and boost productivity.
But spreadsheets, a core tool for many, are still outside ChatGPTβs reach.
At GRID, weβre bridging that gapβbringing spreadsheet workflows into ChatGPT.

Spreadsheets are the backbone of business, but LLMs like ChatGPT & Claude canβt natively handle them. GRID bridges the gap with a high-performance spreadsheet engine, integrating seamlessly with LLMs to unlock their full potential in the AI-first era.
Spreadsheets are a specialized programming language. It requires a specialized runtime environment - a spreadsheet engine. ChatGPT does not have such an engine and therefore cannot directly access or understand spreadsheet models with their formulas, references, functions and calculation methods.
Introducing GRID's new mission:
Bringing Spreadsheets into the AI-first Era
Today we take a major step, expanding the Alpha testing of our ChatGPT solution and opening registrations for early access.
GRID is evolving.
We're bringing spreadsheets into the AI-first era, enabling reliable, verifiable calculations through natural language, agents and automations.

These coming weeks you will be hearing a LOT more from me about GRID's new ChatGPT solution, designed to bring reliable spreadsheet calculations seamlessly into ChatGPT.
That goes for any spreadsheet with a formula in it, but also ensuring that you're working with the most recent data at all times.
@anthropic.com just announced MCP, enabling Claude to seamlessly connect with 3rd-party systems.
Function calls and integrations such as those built with MCP position LLM environments to become the ultimate no-code tools.
Yet another step toward the AI-first era.

The AI-first world will be:
Language-oriented:
We instruct computers in our language, instead of their.
Task-centric:
We start with the task at hand, rather than the software to complete it.
Agentic:
Computers will act on our behalf, even when we are not there.

But *a LOT MORE software will be developed*. Which in turn will increase productivity in other sectors.
This - I think - will be the biggest immediate impact of current generative AI breakthroughs.
While the productivity increase may be slightly less for experienced developers (and other jobs in other industries may certainly be differently affected), there is such an unmet demand for software, that these next few years the demand for developers will remain as high as ever.
Part-weekends and some evenings I may have put in the equivalent of max 5 working days. In those 5 days, ChatGPT has saved me *at least* a full working month, and elevated the quality of what I would otherwise have hacked together.
Having not touched code for 5+ years - and not programmed for a living since the early days of "AJAX" (2004-2006) - I recently got an idea for a pet-project.
So these last three weeks I've re-taught myself web development with the help of ChatGPT.
The true disruptive nature of generative AI is productivity increase, not job displacement. Personal anecdote π
Seeing a video like this - made by a user - is such a great reminder to me and the team here at GRID of how mature our product has become, and what empowers spreadsheet modelers to do in a really short amount of time.
As Kyle explains he uses GRID to create both lead generation tools and tools that he monetizes directly by selling access to them.
