For anyone who might find it useful, I've extracted the last five years of SA crime statistics from the awkward SAPS spreadsheets, and made them available at github.com/afrith/crime...
Stats SA has published Census 2022 data broken down to police precincts, which has allowed me to produce some more detailed maps than previously. New blog post with images: adrian.frith.dev/census-2022-...
A "Fox News Alert" entitled "Autism Announcement" with pictures of Trump and RFK JR.
I couldn't resist the opportunity to use this meme image to announce that yes, I'm officially on the spectrum. Level 1 autism - what would previously have been called Asperger's Syndrome.
(I feel the need to state that Trump's claim about paracetamol during pregnancy is mostly bullshit.)
Berg at Berg River Dam | 2025-07-06 08:00 | 42.008 | 100.03 | 0.68
The Berg River Dam is full and spilling as of this morning. #capetown #damlevels
A map depicting the passes of the Boland mountains in the Western Cape, South Africa, with photos and potted descriptions of each pass. Made by Adrian Frith.
Here's a map/thing I made a while ago showing the various mountain passes through the Boland mountains east of Cape Town.
Moment of interest as I learned that Zohran Mamdani, promising candidate for Mayor of New York, attended the same primary school as me for a couple of years. Immediately followed by moment of horror as I realised that he was several grades below me. π± I should not be that old!
A screenshot with the text "Windows Update - Last ticked: 48 minutes ago"
Hey Microsoft, appreciate the effort to translate Windows into Commonwealth English, but "checked" doesn't get translated as "ticked" in *all* contexts... #i18n

Indeed. One of the design points of the Van Zyl Slabbert system is that it still gives parties seats that are proportional to the votes cast, while adding an element of local representation.
SA's Electoral Reform Panel is starting its public consultations this month, so it seems a good time to recall that we already did this once with the Electoral Task Team in 2003.
I wrote about what the 2024 election would have looked like under the ETT's system: adrian.frith.dev/van-zyl-slab...
Picture of a suburban street with Victorian houses. The street rises up towards a large mountain (Table Mountain). The sky is clear and blue.
Nice day today! #CapeTown
Nope.
Small area Census 2022 dissemination After conducting a thorough quality assessment of sub-municipal census data, it has been determined that Census 2022 results will be made available at electoral ward level. In keeping with the section 17 of the Statistics Act (Act 6 of 1999), which guarantees the confidentiality of individual data, data for some wards with lower case counts will not be made available to prevent the risk of individuals being identified. Where necessary, data are intentionally suppressed to avert the direct or residual disclosure of identifiable units. It is important to highlight that this protocol has been consistently followed in previous Censuses and surveys. The electoral ward-level data will be accessible on the electronic dissemination tools in September 2024 (SuperWeb and Nesstar).
It appears that Stats SA will only be releasing data at ward level, and not small area level. This is ... not good.
Map depicting a hypothetical mixed-member proportional election in South Africa
I've updated my imagined demarcation of South Africa into 200 single-member constituencies for 2024.

I have added the NPE 2024 results to elections.adrianfrith.com π³οΈ

Done my civic duty. #ivoted #specialvote
So far only the high-level municipal data has been released. I will only be able to update dotmap.adrianfrith.com and census2011.adrianfrith.com when the detailed data comes out in a later phase.
For those who want to use the #census2022 data that is in Stats SA's PDFs, I have started extracting it here: github.com/afrith/censu...
A map of population density in South Africa
A map of annual population growth rate in South Africa
Some preliminary mapping now that Census 2022 data has started trickling out.
I don't know what's happening in Richtersveld where population supposedly doubled in 10 years. (6.8% per year = double in 10.5 years.) Maybe a data validity issue because of Census undercount.
For those who might be wondering: Stats SA is releasing the Census national results on Tuesday, but that's only the high-level figures. I will only be able to update dotmap.adrianfrith.com and census2011.adrianfrith.com when the detailed data comes out in a later phase.
Table of dam levels for the Western Cape Water System showing the level at Theewaterskloof to be 115.6%.
Theewaterskloof Dam is at 115.6% of capacity. In the data available from the City (which goes back to 2012) the highest level ever reached was 109.7% in August 2013.
Table of "Water Stored in Major Dams (WCWSS)" for Cape Town for 28 August 2023, showing Overall Percentage Full 103.3%, Berg River 101.1%, Steenbras Lower 102.2%, Steenbras Upper 100.8%, Theewaterskloof 105.5%, VoΓ«lvlei 100.7%, Wemmershoek 100.0%.
And there it is! All six dams full to the brim.
Line graph of VoΓ«lvlei dam levels showing a continuous upwards trend, with the latest value just over 99.3%.
VoΓ«lvlei Dam should be 100% full within a day or two.
Want to work with me? At @da.org.za we are hiring a software developer: https://www.da.org.za/jobs/software-developer-cape-town
Thank you!
You may know me from my dot distribution map of South African census results - dotmap.adrianfrith.com - which got written up a bunch of places, incl the Atlantic - https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2013/10/an-amazing-dizzying-map-of-all-the-languages-and-races-in-south-africa/280210
I post mostly about maps and data visualisations, sometimes about LGBTQ issues, occasionally about politics, and frequently about random bullshit.
#Introduction to me: Iβm Adrian. Iβm a software developer by profession and a map and data nerd by inclination. I work for the Democratic Alliance (a South African political party) as a campaign technology specialist. Iβm gay.
