The Day My Empire Fell: Available 5/24

My beloved Slits! Cut is one of my favorite albums of all time, and their singles (such as this and the relatively and unfairly obscure “In the Beginning There Was Rhythm”) are among the best of the era. Love them with all of my little black heart.

Manfred Mann’s various lineups were possibly the best of the Dylan interpreters, bar maybe The Byrds - partly because they knew how how funny the man truly was. How many groups could have successfully pulled off “If You Gotta Go” and “Get Your Rocks Off”?

Talk about a band that deserves to be better known and loved. Yes, you’ll still hear their two biggest hits on the radio from time to time, but their catalog is loaded with great music. Bradley’s Barn is my personal fave, but all of their albums are good to great.

I don’t find it offensive, personally; it’s just another zinger in this unfolding and increasingly dangerous farce we are all part of, willingly or not. I do hope, however, that anyone who professes to be devoutly Catholic will be horrified and react accordingly.

You have broad and impressive tastes in my book! It’s a pleasure to meet someone with such a clear love of music!

To be honest, it would be difficult to narrow down my list of favorite artists. I’ve been obsessed with music for decades, and my collection encompasses everything from the earliest recorded blues, jazz, classical, and folk to punk, r&b, rock, soul, reggae, world, hip-hop…

Sadly, my daughter lives with her mother, hundreds of miles away from me. She is an amazing artist and writer; though she doesn’t yet play an instrument, she sings beautifully and has written a few excellent songs. I’m very proud of her!

That’s a great playlist, filled with great singers. (I suspect strongly that none of my band’s music would appeal to you - try though I might, I am not a great singer.) I like or love a lot of those artists. I, too, am a Prince fan - Sign o the Times is a desert-island album for me.

Very cool! My favorite instrument is bass. I have an 18-year-old daughter myself who shares my love of music, especially punk and straight-up rock and roll. I think it’s fantastic that your daughter is interested in guitar.

What sort of music do you play?

No need to be sorry! Your honesty is admirable. My brother and I have been recording for years in a variety of styles, and we’re putting it all out there just for kicks.

No lyrics online, I’m afraid, though it’s something I’m giving thought to.

“Come Down” from The Pop Culture Toilet by The Direction. An oldie but an existential crisis-y. Kinda pretty, too - check out Shayne’s guitar solo in the second part of this short song.
