ECMWF's OpenIFS weather forecasting model is now fully open source on GitHub.
OpenIFS is a version of the same system used to produce our operational forecasts. After 15 years of licensed access, it's now genuinely open - publicly available with an Apache 2 licence.

The main difference is a lag in the version: the current supported OpenIFS release is Cy48r1, which was the operational IFS version until 12 Nov 2024. IFS operations is now running Cy49r1, with the main differences summarised here www.ecmwf.int/en/about/med....

We've gradually made some components of the IFS open-source over recent years, such as the radiation scheme (github.com/ecmwf-ifs/ecrad), wave model, and land-surface model. But now we're able to release the full forecast model - no licence, no restrictions. (No data assimilation either though.)

At #PMQs this week Kemi Badenoch claimed βyouth unemployment is at its highest everβ.
This isnβt correct for either the unemployment rate or the number of unemployed 16-24 year olds, according to ONS data.

This sucks. It was public domain, so I recovered the 2020 edition (the last one published as a zip file) and shared it to GitHub simonwillison.net/2026/Feb/5/t...

As National Security Adviser, I was often at the UKβs HQ in Helmand, Camp Bastion. Too often, the tannoy would announce medevac helicopters inbound. The huge base wβd fall silent, out of respect for the young men or women who were fighting for their lives. No, they had not stayed a little back.

Before the 1990s, plane crashes caused by microbursts used to kill planeloads of people fairly regularly.
Dr. Ted Fujita and NCAR scientists figured out how to detect microbursts and warn pilots about them.
Since then? Zero airliner crashes from microbursts.

On the UK-US pharmaceutical deal I'm afraid this does look like two nasty trends coming together to make a very bad agreement for the UK - namely Whitehall power to make deals with no scrutiny, and companies working with countries to coerce others. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
