The line tonight (3/6/2026) for old-timer Panna II, the last restaurant standing at 93 First Ave. in the East Village … a surge in business thanks to a fictional John John and Carolyn B visit in the FX series 'John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette.'

The Joe Strummer mural on 7th Street @ Ave A in the East Village today. Feb. 6 is International Clash Day. KEXP in Seattle (AM Show Host John Richards) started this tradition in 2013, where the station honors the legacy of @theclash.com with deep cuts, covers and Clash tracks.

The Village East by Angelika on 2nd Avenue & 12th Street has a slate of (mostly) Oscar nominees on view. And seats for four of them β€” "Blue Moon," "One Battle After Another," "Sinners" and "Bugonia" β€” are $5 during all screenings. (The screening times vary for these throughout the coming week.)

Today, alcohol sales at theaters are as common as soda and popcorn. Anyway, this was the closest theater to my apt, and I spent a lot of time here. Today, there's a 9-story office building with a private dining club on the ground floor.

The Sunshine Cinema closed on this day in Jan. 2018 after 17 years. Landmark reportedly had the opportunity to buy the property but decided against it after the local Community Board voted down an application for a liquor license in 2012 for pre- and post-movie drinks & dinner. 1/2

The East Village is remembering Stella Soltowska of Ray’s Candy Store (113 Avenue A). Stella, who worked at Ray’s for nearly 50 years, died last week at age 80.

A memorial has formed outside the shop. Friends note the best way to help is to stop by and support the store.

Here's Tompkins Square Park in the light snowfall this morning. Hopefully, some of the snow will stick around for the 34th annual tree lighting here today (Dec. 14) from 4-5 p.m. β€” an excellent East Village tradition.
