Poll taxes were used during Reconstruction & Jim Crow in the South to disenfranchise Black voters. The history of poll taxes is fascinating & worth a wiki-read.

Until Voter IDs are free to the public, requiring voters to show ID at polling stations is unconstitutional. It’s called a “poll tax” & we’ve been here before. Poll taxes were outlawed explicitly for Federal elections in the 24th Amendment in 1964 & SCOTUS ruled all poll taxes unconstitutional in 66

BTW, if for some reason he is unable or if he refuses to swear in the new Congress ( it’s procedural, not political) I believe the Clerk of the House can do it, but I’d have to double-check that.

They are all sworn in at the same time. So in a scenario where the GOP maintains their majority & Johnson gets re-elected, if he doesn’t swear in the new Congress, then that means he doesn’t swear in any GOP congressmen & women.

It looks like they’re going hard on voter suppression & gerrymandering, but I don’t think it will be enough. He cannot arrest all 50 Secretaries of the States. He might try to use ICE to scare people in purple states, sow chaos, etc, but that will end very badly for him.

Mike Johnson loses his job as Speaker at noon on Jan 3, 2027, even if the GOP maintains their majority. They can re-elect him, but he has no power until they do. Instead, the“Clerk of the House” a bureaucrat, swears in the newly elected Speaker & then that Speaker swears in the new House.

So declaring martial law would not stop states from holding elections. War would not stop them. It’s all compartmentalized. Each state has its own laws & rules. They decide, not the federal.

The Constitution keeps elections under the purview of the states. The Founders did that on purpose bc they didn’t trust each other. Checks & balances.

It explicitly excludes the President or anyone in the executive branch from interfering w state’s elections. He has no path, legal or illegal.
