Unfortunately, there is no current setting to disable ads.
Though, this is merely an estimate based off of what I know when it comes to monetization. I'm just a news coverer.
Not only that.. ads are more profitable than subscriptions by a mile.
30 million users a month can earn a company 3-20 million dollars monthly while 100,000 C.AI+ users may generate only a million monthly.
The official announcement said how AI is extremely expensive to run themselves, which is definitely true. For a well-performing AI service you may need millions of dollars to operate and supply GPU's and pay electricities.

Running AI models for tens of millions of people can get extremely costly. Character.AI does not make much money, if any. It's pretty reasonable as to why they're taking these measures, though unfortunate for the consumer.
Character.AI is not owned by Google. In 2024, Google partnered with Character.AI for 2.7 billion dollars for Character.AI's LLM technology.
