Well there are two main compeditors for this:
Minecraft (2013) which has sales in the region of 350 million copies across all versions.
Tetris (1988) which if totalling all versions including mobile downloads exceeds 500 million
When I think of Gamespy i think of Unreal Tournament (1999). I spent many an hour killing with dual pistols, i was near unstoppable with the simplest weapons in the game.

THE DEFINITIVE FPS

One of my favourite games from ID Software and often overlooked i feel is Rage 2 (2019).
Open World ✅
Shooting bad guys ✅
Mad Max-esque World ✅
A car that can go toe to toe with the Batmobile ✅
Requires "running backwards" skill learned from years of playing Doom ✅
Now we have to talk about ID Softwares breakout game, Wolfenstein 3D. Smooth 3D gameplay and killing Nazis whilst trying to escape the prison of Castle Wolfenstein. It was revolutionary.
Although what many dont know is that this is the 3rd Wolfenstein Game (more at a later time)
The 1st entry in this weeks celebration of @idsoftware.bsky.social is the predecessor to Doom. No, not Wolfenstein 3D but Catacomb 3-D. It was the 3rd Catacomb game but the first to use 3D graphics and paved the way for the future of gaming.

This was one of the first side scrolling beat-em ups I ever played. I was so hyped to get it later for the SNES and it felt awesome to have an arcade like game at home.

Turning 25yrs old a few weeks ago this very early MMORPG shaped the early years of the internet for many and it still playable online to this day. If you have never tried it I advise you to check it out.

Just Cause 3 has more easter eggs than people think, the landfill is just te tip of the rubbish heap.
Youll also find Mjolinir, Thors mighty hammer and the Buster Sword, Cloud Strife's weapon of choice (from Final Fantasy VII).
