Any way! Thank you to @raddagher.bsky.social for the opportunity to be a bit reflective in this moment. It's a big one for me personally. I hope people do go see the movie. A lot of wonderful and passionate people worked on it and they disserve recognition. BUT never stop supporting indie games! π€
So, to me, I don't hold movies up as something superior though I understand the point this post is making. There is this sort of "but now it's a movie guys!" kind of vibe these days and I agree that is unfair to other media. I just don't want passionate people to be misidentified as money people.
Now, if we're talking movie studios. Sure. Maybe there is a desire to make some money off something that is a bit popular, but what it gave ME was an opportunity to tap into a lost love. Movies aren't "better" but man is it cool to be able to just be creative with passionate people.
Full circle, I get a chance to make a movie based off my game. Just one dude! Me for some reason! I get to do that! That was something I couldn't pass up. Not for money (movie finances are weird. I won't be getting anything really and I knew that) but I could try something I always wanted to do.
I had done minor film stuff in college, but I loved video games and 3D art at the same time. (I also thought I wouldn't be any good at it) So I branched off into game development early on but my love for telling stories never left. 13 years later after AAA, I wanted to try to make my own.
Movies have a unique set of solutions to problems. If it works in the tiny box, it works! No code or bugs. I love that. Anyone who has played my games knows I like telling stories, so this is a dream of mine to make a film even if I'm not directing or anything like that.
π§΅I don't know why this post sticks with me. Not in a negative way at all but in an introspective way. Like WHY did I want to make a movie?
I love making games (obviously. It's been my career for 20+ years) but I also love film. I love creativity and making something. One isn't better imo. - 1/7

This isn't about money (I won't be getting any) and it's not about film being better. Its about being able to explore creative projects around a world I spent years building.
The same reason I watch LOTR behind the scenes over and over is why I wanted to be a part of a film and 100% would again!
I don't think film is "better" really. I simply love film as an art. I just happened to go into game development. Creative solutions that only need to work on screen are fun problems to solve to me.
If I felt film was objectively better, I would have not become a dev but I love both.
For me, I love making movies. I just happened to go into game development instead so this was something I didnt want to miss.
My excitement isn't from film being "better" or making money as much as doing another creative project with something I poured my heart into.
This is out on FRIDAY?!
Well, weekend plans now set.
