on our cold dusk walk, between rains, we watched a cassin’s kingbird and a tiny kestrel quietly perched, facing west, enjoying the last of the twilight. the heavens were heavily overcast, yet the oceanward skies were open just enough to be painted with vivid gradients.

suddenly, at the end of twilight, a huge flock of turkey vultures streamed silently overhead, intermittently eclipsing the crescent moon. the black cloud spiraled upward in the darkness of dusk, then settled into the trees silhouetted against the hills.

on tonight’s walk, as the last rusted gold faded from the horizon-swift cloudbelt, and the skies shaded to indigo: a barn owl flew overhead, screeched twice, and disappeared into the darkness.
