Pittsburgh's Lucy Kennedy Miller founded the State Suffrage Organization in 1912, traveling to Harrisburg to lobby legislators.

When the Legislature met to ratify the 19th Amendment, she became the first woman to ever address the PA legislature in 1919.

Gertrude Bustill Mossell was a journalist, editor and activist in Philadelphia.

Her first article on suffrage was published in 1885.

She directed her writings to women and the Black community throughout her journalism career.

Daisy Lampkin served an important role in the Women's Suffrage Movement.

Born in Reading & living in Pittsburgh, Lampkin hosted meetings & gave street-corner speeches to advocate.

She worked hard to organize participation by Black women in Pennsylvania.

An important figure in the Woman Suffrage Movement was Philadelphia’s Caroline Burnham Kilgore.

Kilgore was arrested in 1871 for attempting to vote. After losing her PA Supreme Court case, she became the first female student admitted to Penn Law School and then a lawyer.

Kate C. Heffelfinger, of Shamokin, refused to soften her position or stop fighting women to have the vote.

She was jailed numerous times for public protests and demonstrations. In this photo, she is being escorted out of Occoquan Prison in 1917.

Philadelphia's Mary H. Ingham played an important role in women's suffrage.

As chairwoman of the Pennsylvania Branch of the National Woman’s Party, she was a state leader in the ratification campaign of the 19th Amendment.

Charles "Teenie" Harris, of Pittsburgh, chronicled life in the Black neighborhoods for the Pittsburgh Courier, one of America's oldest Black newspapers, from 1936 to 1975.

Harris took more than 80,000 images during his career.

Pittsburgh's Jackie Ormes was the first Black woman cartoonist to produce a nationally syndicated comic strip.

She was the creator of the Torchy Brown comic strip and the Patty-Jo 'n' Ginger panel.

Philadelphia's Alain LeRoy Locke was a writer, philosopher and educator.

Known as the "Dean of the Harlem Renaissance," Locke wrote numerous books, articles and reviews.

In 1907, he became the first the first Black American Rhodes Scholar.
