hot tip - recently discovered

if you are used to appending "reddit" to your google search, there's a better way.

Just add "&udm=18" to the URL.

This will trigger the Google "Forum" search, which finds many lesser known goldmines of real people talking about stuff.

Another interesting bit β€” the Dong Khoi street used to be known as β€œRue Catinat”. I keep noticing the coffee chain β€œKatinat” around Vietnam. Maybe it’s named after this street? (Which in turn is named after a French general)

Anyway, here’s a Katinat branch on the former Rue Catinat!

Graham Greene’s Saigon - HISTORIC VIETNAM The Saigon locations used by British writer Graham Greene in his acclaimed anti-war novel The Quiet American have long been a favourite topic for travel writers. Here by request is a recap of the most...

Many of the other buildings in the book have been demolished to make way for the modern shopping district β€” the Dong Khoi street.

Death by a thousand microservices The software industry is learning once again that complexity kills

After working with a microservices setup first-hand, I resonate with large parts of this, but all the JS-bashing is uncalled for.

As a matter of fact, I have seen the same complexity manufactured using other languages. That's what it is. Manufactured complexity.

True, I work on a open-source database which has a 4-month release cycle & there's a QA team for that part of the product.

There's also a closed source managed service, which is updated continously. For this, we only rely integration tests + monitoring.

The Nike running app’s guides runs also work amazingly. I wonder if there are any other running-specific podcasts?

If someone would’ve asked me 10 days ago, I wouldn’t have thought this was possible.

I have learned that it comes down to endurance, not speed. Speed may come later, but first I need to go steady and be consistent!
