i think it's cool that people are trying, but email had success because it was universal, not because it was decentralized
bluesky should be like wikipedia. a non-profit that barely survives on donations. i need jack to beg me for $10 twice a year.
it became practically unusable in the years before Google became a dominant figure and was able to throw its weight around. now it is effectively a pay-to-play game. this is the best decentralization delivers with ~unlimited resources.
"if people can make it work" is pretty important, because email was a total tire fire until Google basically figured out how to get rid of spam by centralizing a lot of it. now it's just sort of a mess, and it's the best we can do.
