That's really annoying. 🫩 Something needs to change in this space and fast. Let people write their stories and if the reader can draw comparisons to media they've consumed in the past, let them.

My problem with publishing is that I’m not a fan of comp titles. I hate to have to describe my book as AxB, This meets That, imagine this plus that!
I understand it’s to help gain audience & show what inspired it but I would rather just have my story be represented by a blurb and not other stories.

Like, I really like that idea better. Because, like you said, not everyone is familiar with the media comparisons. You can tell me a book is like The Witch of Hooplah and I won't know what that means. 🧍🏿‍♀️

I didn't know what a "comp title" was until now. They were just words and I was like "oh, okay..."

But is this a newer thing? I haven't really heard that term much until the past few years. I'm used to the blurbs on the back of the book and going "Oh that sounds interesting! Let me give it a read!"

Even in my brief gripe with trad pub (2021-23) I could barely get through to them that they were asking way too much from me. The timelines were just too unrealistic for a 300 page GN. Especially as a writer-illustrator like I have to write this twice practically, and all while getting bullied
