Instead of age verification, websites should just make you describe the first time you saw someone die on the Internet. if the story makes whoever reads it sad, you're an adult for Internet purposes.

So I know a lot is going on right now, but I do want to share this:
Iβm excited to share the launch of the new Microsoft Inclusive Design website π
This project is my love letter to the community and practice thatβs shaped my work for nearly a decade.

@cyborgk9.bsky.social They may also be able to get her connected with some online communities, if she has a phone she can use well enough to use Zoom, or someone who can help her get into a zoom call.
@cyborgk9.bsky.social When I lived in Toronto they were enormously helpful. Also, if she lives in Toronto, the community events they run are always good. Connection is important.
Usercentrics (the cookie banner solution) is considering building an accessibility overlay. They're asking for feedback and opinions, for which they will give a β¬30 gift card as a thank you. Opinions about #accessibility overlays? Take this survey...

@zelenasage.blacksky.app Because the people who need it can't turn it on. You can turn it off.
@cyborgk9.bsky.social I do not. However, these are the people who would: https://www.balancefba.org/
@winter.razorgirl.diy But can any of this really matter without physical and sensory anchors? You're missing an entire layer of associations. The way smells of certain foods make me remember home. The way someone's voice makes me associate with newscasters. A song that takes me right back in time.

Sighted users often use bold or large fonts to create the appearance of headings in documents. People using screen readers have no way of understanding these visual cues. Use heading styles from the styles menu to correctly format headings.

My book, Accessibility For Everyone, is now free and online as a website.
accessibilityforeveryone.site
The book was first published by A Book Apart in 2017 but it holds up! It covers web accessibility for designers, developers, content folks, and really everyone who works in tech.
NY Times Opinion asked a linguist about the "return" of the R-word word in the video.
Not a single disabled person in that video.
They used the r-word repeatedly in it.
Then said this is "interesting" given that now Trump seems to now have some "cognitive challenges" (their words).
@blindcoder.bsky.social Sounds like it should talk to General Failure and Major Problem. Or maybe just kick Private Parts?
If I started an old-fashioned mailing list discussion group for disabled folks who find The endless discord servers inaccessible, would people join?

@brooke-8.bsky.social Yup. On IOS, use skeets. On desktop, use FastSM: https://github.com/masonasons/FastSM/
Digital Accessibility pro tip ...
If you publish about digital accessibility and include a data table image with empty alt text, you are failing the basics and should not publish on the topic.

"I see weβre calling text-to-speech an βassistive toolβ now. I didnβt realize not being bothered to learn to read was a disability.β
The ableism inherent in this is really wild. It's quite literally what said about every single assistive tool throughout history.
"I see we're calling spellcheck an 'assistive tool' now. Didn't realize not being bothered to learn to spell was a disability."
I'm glad for bluesky as an informational clusterf er I mean conglomeration, but I see an awful lot of people posting important stuff while neglecting alt text.
It's so easy to make sure you don't forget this important accessibility feature.
News is too important to not use alt text... especially for text. It's difficult to take any news source seriously if they don't use alt text for a couple sentences. Even if accessibility wasn't so necessary, text doesn't always scale well on mobile devices, and alt text increases searchability.
However, choice is always good. And I'm glad we can now use both of the "decentralized" platforms. Even if the 300 character limit on bluesky is another thing that bothers me.
I'm still not convinced bluesky is really, truely, decentralized. I run my own PDS, but all that seems to mean is I pay the hosting and storage bill myself. It doesn't actually give me any control of anything. For that, I'd have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to run my own app view etc.
If you're looking for a #blind and #screenreader #accessible bluesky client for desktop, give FastSM a try: https://github.com/masonasons/FastSM/ #a11y

Hmmm. There are at least some accessibility improvements in the official bluesky app since last I checked.
