Night and Day’s recruitment and retention policy appears to be: invite someone in for a trial period when they’re short staffed, show them how to use the till, ‘don’t know how to use the coffee machine? Google it’, initially give them three shifts per week, after six months, reduce to one per week.

I do HR. I was recently overseeing a student panel in which one of the questions was ‘What’s your favourite book?’ The candidate said that he couldn’t remember the name of it and the kids probably wouldn’t have heard of the author but it was an autobiography of a rock singer called Julian Cope.
