i have seen them say they will host their own appview with diff moderation.

thanks to did’s and pds backups you never have to trust anyone 100%, but luckily you will be able to use their appview and client without migrating to their pds

atproto is the perfect network for portal to make a comeback, it kind of means the same thing as appview in a literal sense with added 2000s technological mysticism (with shared history and understanding of it being a web frontend)
