Not a fan of citation management software, but I agree with the broader point here.
It takes at most an extra 15-20min to use google scholar, etc., to manually check citations.

Graph of award probability of R35 and R01 from NIH factbook as a function of review rank percentile. As is apparent, 2025 is a significant departure, with lower award probabilities at all scores <40 and significant departures from norm, where even being in the top 10% is no longer a nearly certain indicator of success. Data source: https://report.nih.gov/nihdatabook/report/302
The data is in: the NIH goalposts have shifted.
What were once almost certain fundable scores have become coin flips and what used to be likely grants have become aspirational, leading to fewer awards.
Another manifestation of how HHS policies have led to fewer awards and less science.
Really insightful podcast with @stephenaguilar.com and @galesinatra.bsky.social. Good discussion of how #GenAI can produce conceptual change and the identity and self-perception factors that significantly drive that change (or lack thereof).
Both politicians in Mexico. The apocryphal story goes that one of them (mom's side). Got his arm torn off during a bullfight.
I assume the bull won.
Nope.

"Hey...hey you. You wanna like...*not* read? Reading is for nerds. Let me just, you know, summarize all these words for you so you can read less. You'll have so much more fun reading less."
One of my favorite albums!
Can AI actually help us understand controversial topics, or is it just making things harder? I'm joined by learning expert @galesinatra.bsky.social to bridge the gap between complex ideas and artificial intelligence.

Nice! I'll be on a panel there this year: "Creativity and Curiosity in the Age of AI: From the Arts to Education"
I would like to do the opposite of this.
Deus sine Machina
I was asked by the American Mathematical Society to write something to explain to mathematicians why they should care about the federal role in education data/research, so I teamed with @dqcdata.bsky.social's Rachel Anderson and wrote this: www.ams.org/journals/not...

Glad to see others thinking about this.
The idea that humans are reducible and replicable via subsets of our online behaviors (our emails, social media, etc.) is ludicrous.
We are not merely a sum of the things we do online.
Too many folks developing AI seem to not understand this point.
People are weird. This was covered well in DS9 (low gravity alien who was in Starfleet).
They even took a shot at Cardassian architecture which was less accessible.
The future is filled with all sorts of people and abilities. Thatβs the point of Star Trek.
A core memory of mine is leaving UChicago's International House (where I lived) in Feb 2009 in nothing but a thin sweater because I looked outside, saw that it was sunny, and used my California brain to parse the weather.
It was like 6 degrees out. I've never felt so betrayed by the Sun.

Great new issue of Educational Psychologist just dropped! Wonderful articles on adaptive teaching experience, motivation theory (why do the same theories continue to dominate?), and a new model of goal revision! Available here: www.tandfonline.com/toc/hedp20/c... #PsychSciSky #AcademicSky #EduSky
Not anymore. We hunted them to extinction during the great smoothy crusades.
It's honestly what makes it so re-watchable. We usually watch it twice a year or so.
#Scrivener 3 on Windows & Mac Tip of the Day: Make links between documents by dragging a document from the binder onto a selected word in the editor.
<-- This psychologist is tired of people personifying a tool that functions as a result of statistics.
Dang it I watched the entire thing with my ears.
Whaaaat you mean people still matter in the age of machines? Thatβs crazy talk.
