new years is the only time i can write this on a project i started literally a couple of hours ago
meow :3
"is it a keysmash or an AVX instruction?"
Forgot to make this post yesterday.
For the second time, fedi was down for a prolonged period of time and all data was lost. I got a bit too trigger happy with sudo rm -rf....
It's back now though, and better than ever!
Merry Christmas and happy holidays to everyone who celebrates!
dear god how many of your solutions output to a PDF file now ๐ญ
I feel like I'm watching your descent into pure madness as these solutions get more and more deranged
My Bluesky PDS has now been migrated to bluesky.sillyjune.xyz instead of bsky.sillyjune.xyz
Hopefully there should be no issues; I've migrated to a new PDS that's easier to manage and in a VM instead of a docker container.
I should really think about moving away from Cloudflare for my stuff
It's a necessary evil for my infrastructure, though. My internet is super slow and the caching it does works wonders to reduce the load across everything. It's still slow either way, but slightly better with Cloudflare.
All of these look super awesome.
I'm not too interested in VR but the tech looks awesome. Could see myself buying a steam machine if it has upgradeable RAM (Even more so a CPU socket, but that's a long shot).
I love my deck's controls so I might have to treat myself to the controller. Can't wait!
Alongside my Fediverse instance, I've just migrated my website (sillyjune.xyz) across to the new server!
My fedi instance is back and better than ever!
fedi.sillyjune.xyz/notice/B07Gq...
There could be some more downtime today while I change cloudflared config, but it should be brief if so.
Fedi instance will be down for a little while since I want to overhaul it, unrelated to the infrastructure migration!
Sorry for all the downtime across all my services over the last week or so! I am working on some big things behind the scenes and it has been quite rough to get working.
Hopefully the worst of it is now over.
do you ever just tell yourself you're going to do something tomorrow but realize you never started 4 months later
All the memory I have looked at seems to paint a similar picture - Costing roughly double what it used to be even just a week or two ago.
...at least DDR5 is actually slightly cheaper than DDR4 now, even though both are prohibitively expensive right now.
Currently my server has 64GB of RAM and sits basically at 100% utilization at all times, it's ready to OOM at any given moment. Originally I was planning to upgrade to 128GB (4x32GB) which would cost around ยฃ140. Not cheap, but also not bad. That would now cost over ยฃ300.
The memory DIMMs in my server currently cost me ยฃ71 (DDR5-4800, 32GB per DIMM) back when I built the thing. Now that same memory module costs ยฃ150.
So I will in fact not be upgrading the memory in any system for a little while it looks like.
Memory chip manufacturers are prioritizing the faster memory you get on GPUs (And maybe some NPUs, no idea how many dedicated NPU cards are out there) meaning they can't produce enough traditional DDR4/DDR5.
I *was* hoping on upgrading my server's RAM sometime early next year or in the next couple months but unfortunately prices have skyrocketed in the last week or so.
Unsurprisingly, from what I gather, it's to do with AI datacenters.
I might do it Thursday! Not wednesday (One again suffering from the lack of an edit feature on bluesky ๐ญ)
Hopefully my changes to the network routing should improve network performance a little bit, but there's only so much I can do with its network connection
The case is supposed to arrive on Tuesday but due to work, I may put it off till the weekend or do it on Wednesday. If things are down sometime this week, it's probably that!
Just a little heads up - My infra will be down for maintenance sometime this week.
I'm doing a case swap for my server to mount it to a rack instead of having it freestanding, and improving some network routing while I am at it.
welcome to linux, please pick your starter distro:
- difficult linux
- racism linux
- backdoored linux
- bloat linux
- slop linux
Unfortunately Microsoft is kinda the only one making decent ones.
Some do exist from other companies but they're usually ARM based or have a cheap intel CPU that is similar to my current Microsoft surface pro 5 I repaired
