Layout analysis *model*, I obviously meant to say! This is one case where I don't really see the benefit of end-to-end processing with general-purpose models.

Ideally you should be able to automatically "upgrade" a PDF to a PDF/UA. This shouldn't be too hard to approximate if you have a tool (or, sure, a VLM) that can give you structured outputs with bounding boxes. Which is to say that you can probably do it with Docling :-)

The downside is that high oil prices will make the tar sands profitable again. Alberta strong and free!

Little clarification because I Am Not An Urban Planner™ : even though there's always a non-zero minimum lateral setback, this doesn't matter in practice as long as "implantation contigue" is allowed, which it generally is.

Having lots of fun looking up my old apartments and noting all of the ways they are dérogatoire! If it isn't the height limit then it's *definitely* the lateral setbacks... spectrum.montreal.ca/connect/anal...?

Well, certainly allowed with a dérogation mineure (variance), so you know, wait 9 months and hope that the CCU doesn't find your building too out of neighbourhood character...

Historically, also, zero setbacks and 3-story buildings were allowed basically everywhere. Incredibly enough, this isn't the case anymore! Basically no existing building on the Plateau would be legal to build now. Which is why we have a housing crisis now too.

Douglas Todd: Jarring 18-storey tower on leafy Vancouver street a sign of the out-of-scale times
About 10 steel-and-glass highrises, much like the one proposed for Yukon and 14th, are set to arise among character homes within the Broadway plan zone.

Douglas Todd: Hundreds of quiet east Vancouver side streets upzoned for six-storey apartment blocks
Some residents in the vast Rupert and Renfrew area did not know their pleasant side streets had been upzoned for six- to eight-storey apartment blocks. It calls into question the city of Vancouver's murky "engagement strategy."

'Monstrosities' or the evolution of housing? Multi-unit buildings on single-family lots gain traction in B.C. cities
The number of multi-unit developments on single-family lots is increasing in B.C. neighbourhoods dominated by single-detached houses. Opinions vary over what these changes will mean for communities.

I oppose this building because it's too tall

It's just this building, not all new housing?

You are not against all new housing, right?

A storey in four acts as captured by local news media:

18 storeys is too high, we’d be fine with 4-6 storeys

6 storeys are too big, we'd be fine with multiplexes

Multiplexes are monstrosities, we are fine with existing post-Second World War bungalows

The alerts will also be delayed a minute or two depending on what network you're on... so my phone (on Koodo 5G) went off, then two minutes later my girlfriend's phone (on Koodo 4G, in the same room!) went off again. I guess we'll keep an eye out for that kid, in our sleep, 90km away...

The valiant defense of single-family zoning and neighbourhood character in the 70s led Canadian planners to put density only in places where nobody will complain about it. Montreal is less bad because it was built earlier and has always had mostly sensible zoning (e.g. zero setbacks)

I think (hoping some contruction expert can clarify) that for 3 stories or less it's okay to have a single exit. Yes, maybe exterior stairs count? In my town we have this complex which is five 8-plex blocks (3.5 stories) with one inside and one outside staircase:
