“My name is Lizzie and I am committed to fighting for socialist change, both within Your Party and beyond it. I've been involved in a variety of political groups and have taken on roles such as LGBT+ officer, Women's officer and co-chair of UNISON's national young members group. I've also been involved in local community organising including Palestinian liberation groups, anti-fascist groups, and educational workshops. I've been learning about politics and social injustice since I was a child, as I wanted to understand why hard working people still faced significant financial issues. I went on to study politics at university for my undergraduate degree and completed a masters in sociology in 2020. This is when a group claiming to represent a section of people (LGBTQ+, Disability etc) becomes officially recognised by the party as the organ of that identity group. Often, these groups have special access to the party leadership, reserved seats on the executive or nominating powers.

Text: This causes many issues. It creates another layer of bureaucracy for minority peoples to navigate to get their voice heard. In many parties, these sections are factionally aligned to the leadership to maintain their access and privileges, which makes them ineffective at speaking up or providing criticism. In reserved seats, token anointed individuals are treated as a way of signing off on decisions affecting groups, without having to consult them.

Text: There is a better way of doing politics, a way that centres democracy and member led liberation. The aim is not to have a single trans person signing off on decisions; it is to build strong, democratic structures that encourage people to take the lead in their own political development and their liberation. We can build strong, diverse organisers, we can debate strategy, refine our policy and be an exemplar of democracy.

Text: We do not need to attach ourselves to specific leaders - allies or not. We instead show everyone that the power lies with the members and anyone can support us. Through our empowerment and building each other up within our interrelated struggles, we then become impossible to sideline. Our influence becomes permanent and reliant on no one but ourselves.

Text: The Filton 24 are a group of 24 activists charged with taking direct action against an Elbit Systems factory. All 24 are being held in prison without trial, with some expecting to face almost two years in prison before their trial. The British government is using counter-terrorism powers to punish people for resisting a genocide. We are now entering the fourth week of a hunger strike by six prisoners.

Text: They are on hunger strike to try and win five demands: •⁠ ⁠End all censorship of prisoners •⁠ ⁠Immediate bail •⁠ ⁠The right to a fair trial •⁠ ⁠Deproscribe Palestine Action •⁠ ⁠Shut Elbit down It is the biggest collective hunger strike in the prisons of the British state since the 1981 Irish republicans’ hunger strike in the north of Ireland.

Text: In addition, last week the first trial of the Filton 24 started and is due to last 10 weeks. The Trans Liberation Group would like to express our unconditional solidarity with all of the political prisoners arrested for resisting the genocide in Palestine. Text: Transphobia is deeply linked to misogyny.

Text: Restrictions on bodily autonomy devastate both cis women and trans people, and escalating attacks on trans people coincide with wider attacks on all those who challenge established gender norms that reinforce Patriarchy and White-Supremacy. The rise in Nationalism and attacks on migrants is part of a pattern of scapegoating marginalised communities. Far-right ideologies offer no real answers to the housing crisis, cost of living crisis, or decimation of public services. When they win power and fail to address underlying issues, they simply escalate attacks and create new scapegoats.

Text: We cannot effectively fight these systems of oppression individually. The fight for Trans Liberation is inextricably linked to the fights against Capitalism, Nationalism, White-Supremacy, and Patriarchy.
