Here to spread word there's no better place than Rhode Island to explore historic cities and seaside New England by walking, rolling and transit!

This captures two of my big beefs with AI:

(1) Writing is thinking. If you use AI to write, you are foreclosing your own thinking.

(2) Sucking at something is the first step to getting better at something. The practice is the work. AI will only help you suck in a different and more depressing way.

In a normal first world country the official response to this kind of loud clear Market Signal would be...

Trains 2 hours apart, not enough? Let's run more trains here, ASAP

You finding anything over the air around here that is consistently worth tuning in to?

When I see junk like that I assume a fraudulent account is posing as the actual Providence Tourism Council which might exist but that can't be what I am seeing.

But don't stop like you should if you are far away enough when the light turns yellow. Got rear-ended that way.

Statistics can leave out what's most important. Traffic casualties are easy to measure. But even while no one in the neighborhood is bleeding, "Parents don't let their kids play outside" constitutes 24/7/365 damage to everyone's well being. No dollar figure or statistic reflects that so ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ.

A car dependent transportation system is more expensive than any other to restore after a snowstorm. Not just moneywise - the cost must also be reckoned in the degradation of every other transportation option when the city's sole priority is to make room for cars and parking space.

Providence Place is not that. It was merely dressed up to look like urban fabric from windshield perspective. Except via the garage, all access to that mall is a design afterthought: Obscure and uninviting for anyone who happens to be the city for other purposes.

Successful urban malls as you describe are knitted into the fabric of the city: Passing through one is a convenient route (or no more than a short detour) easily included in countless individual walking trips.

If there were safe direct biking infrastructure, almost everyone for miles around would be able to travel to and from that mall (not to mention the train station and the rest of downtown) much faster than is now possible.

If you are a mile and a half or less from the mall you can walk there and back in less time than it takes to drive, find a space, walk in from and back to your space, exit the garage and drive home.

That and the clumsy garage layout which eschewed a convenient traffic pattern in order to fit more parking spaces into the structure which is never fills up anyway.

The hostile design - "make people walk past random shops as much as possible on their way to the movies or wherever they want to go" is the biggest reason people hate going there. ๐Ÿงต

Seeing how many irresponsible property owners are "Deep pockets," I am surprised this has not happened. One spectacular judgement would change behaviors a lot faster than unenforced minor fines.

The drama, stress and especially expense of snowstorms are mostly on account of motor vehicles. Imagine how cheap and prompt cleanup could be if only sidewalks had to be done. Inexcusable that the city's efforts always worsen access for people who do not own a car yet pay no less in taxes.

Message sent by those extra piles at corners: This is your city saving 1 minute of work by a plow driver by creating 10-60 minutes of work for a neighbor who probably won't do it anyway. NBD because it matters only to people not traveling by car!

Overlooked factor in the Driving After This Snowstorm Is The Worse Ever shambles:

Everyone's car is a few feet longer and wider than the one they had last time it snowed this much and did not melt right away.

If sledding at Neutaconkanut Hill is unsafe, the job of the parks department is to landscape, gate and manage it so it can be used safely not just put up No Sledding signs and walk away.

Stormwater treatment would be a much smaller problem if not for excessive space devoted to cars. It's one of many cost burdens conveniently omitted from our deliberately obscure accounting of what actually gets spent to provide "Freeways" and "Free parking."

Smaller, high rent space justified by steady foot traffic is also pressure to carry what that traffic sees fit to buy which may be a departure from your important vision of what a destination map store ought to be filled with.
