The ampersand was also originally a ligature of the letters “et”, so “&c.” is probably newer than “etc.”, but at some point we reverted to the form with less calligraphic flourish.

Seattle tea-enjoying friends: there was a break-in at Friday Afternoon Tea, so if you were going to be restocking any time soon, now would be a great time to support them!
I still haven’t. I know I should! It’s on the list! I’ll get to it!
We have to. It’s the only way any of us ever know who anyone’s talking to
As a David, I grew up knowing the opening lines of Dr. Seuss’s “Too Many Daves” by heart.
That was the least easy part, I’m afraid. Cooked them down in butter over low heat for like 45 minutes, then cranked up the heat for about a minute to get some crispy bits.
I look at the spice cabinet and let my heart guide me. Tonight, it was berbere (an East African spice blend), a little smoked paprika, and a bay leaf. They’re cooked in a mixture of chicken stock and canned diced tomato, and once they were done I blended about a cup and added it back in to thicken.
A shallow white bowl with a wide rim, in which is a steaming pile of white rice, red lentil curry, and a small topping of fried onions and bell peppers.
Damn, as much as I love them I don’t know why I don’t make lentils and rice more often. Just way over in the best quadrant of the “effort vs delicious” plot
From this and the last time they met, I feel like Mamdani really can play him like a fiddle.
A 20th level cleric steps over the county border, and suddenly all the residents of the capital city start hearing ominous wedding bells
I think I probably watched all of Dead Like Me at least once year in college, and a few times since then. Such a great set of characters.
Oh my god the idle animation dance at the beginning and the fatality dizziness at the end. Brilliantly done
But seriously, a friend of mine brought some loaded kimchi baked potatoes to a recent potluck, and everyone agreed that:
1. They were delicious, and
2. The thing that made them delicious was the kimchi fried in bacon fat, which would’ve been great even without the potato under them
With great gusto
Glad she’s back home!
I’ve done it once or twice! I don’t have a strong desire to stream for randos, but I’d do it more often if I had more friends who wanted to tune in. In fact, I’m just now taking a break from writing some rust.
On a white plate, a pile of fried tofu tossed in a bright red sauce. A layer of rice is just visible underneath in some spots, and it’s been garnished with sesame seeds.
Very happy with myself right now. Found myself with a thin pantry but no desire to actually go to the store (currently wearing pajama pants), yet I still threw together an improvised yangnyeom fried tofu. Pretty damn delicious.
Also I’ve lived in Seattle long enough to be excited when the city unites this way, and in Boston long enough to earn my hatred of the Patriots.
I host every year as an excuse to cook an irresponsible amount of chicken wings.
But this year it was fun to watch with an energetic room and to hear the folks in my neighborhood shooting off illegal fireworks.

I’m in this photo and I don’t like it
It is the great tragedy of hot cocoa that I desperately want it a few times a year, but not consistently enough to buy or make a mix in advance, and so mostly when the want hits me in some sense I hit cocoa ghosted MYSELF
It was transcendent.
I was at the time a little drunker than I had intended to be that night, and I think that’s maybe the perfect state to experience it in.
At a restaurant in Denver a few years ago I encountered a chicken tikka masala Philly cheesesteak, and if you don’t think that’s proof that mixing of cultures enriches the world I don’t know what to tell you
I have a new whiskey glass that I’ve never used for its intended purpose. Feels like that might be an appropriate time.
Have you been connected with @brimwats.com? They’re a fellow Psi U (Delta Nu chapter) who has been doing a bunch of work developing best practices for metadata in archives, research, etc. for faithfully representing trans and gender diverse people. Feels somewhat connected to your linguistics work!
But if you start to see patterns like economic anxiety driving people _in the very groups he’s targeting_ over to his side, that points to a specific messaging failure that can be fixed.
I still think you have to try to understand. If it becomes clear that the core reasoning is “he’s promising to hurt the people I also want to hurt” then I agree you can move on.
Did you know: if you have leftover couscous, you can fry it with an egg in much the same manner as fried rice
