Still, we know full well that Intent is Not Magical and that even though we didn't intend to hurt anyone, we have done so. For that, we can only apologize and say that we will do what's in our power to ensure that these same mistakes don't happen again at the Hugo Awards...

The mishaps and mistakes were due to factors that we're sure they'll articulate if they need to. We can say for certain that none of it was due to malice, lack of caring, or ignorance.
Same goes for us. The mistakes were true mistakes and not a lack of fucks given.

We tried to mitigate problems that have come up in the past, such as rampant mispronunciation of non-Western names, and keep the focus on the awards. As Hosts, our job was to let the events team know what we needed to do our job on stage. For the most part, they did.

If you feel cool with reading the essay, I'd love suggestions for works of fiction/authors who can replace Gaiman/Sandman while still conveying a similar point. The writer & fiction don't have to map exactly. I'm down for using multiple examples to cover the issues, so send many suggestions!

A modified version is a lecture in our character class. I talk about Sandman story "A Game of You" and the character Wanda, a trans woman. I use this to illustrate several points about representation and growing as an artist.
