Having worked at GSFC for three plus years during/after the 2008 recession, this is hard to read and very sad. I was purely support staff but it was a joy working with scientists who were mostly doing exactly what they wanted to be doing, doing it well, and eager to share their knowledge.
If you could order people like pencils, maybe what you're saying would be possible. (Maybe.) But people run their own lives and bills need paid.
I'm also sure that many former civil servants are unwilling to return to work for this govt, esp. subject to new mgmt, background checks, etc.

Which year and where? It's my understanding that there was definitely a time that apprentices lived with their masters. The room and board was part of the deal as they were paid less while they were learning.

Because the very first funeral I attended, at 16, was for a friend's mother who died of colon cancer, and because I have a family history of colon cancer deaths on both sides in my genealogical history, I have always expected colonoscopy would be important.
