If you're doomscrolling, guess what? So far there are 51 kākāpō chicks hatched and thriving this season, the same number of birds as we had in TOTAL in the 90s! Only one chick has died and there are still fertile eggs waiting to hatch!
We remember.
Super niche #earlymodern query: has anyone ever worked with account books that are records of salaries received by specific individuals?
I've a prioress and her steward both making these payments. The individual verifies receipt and then signs. The book is a running tally of these disbursements.
You should stay far away from Swiss German in that case!
We unfortunately try to cute-ify everything: A mighty dam holding back water? Nah, that's a Dämmli or Wehrli. How about just stuff (Sache)? Well, those are Sächeli of course.
See that garbage can over there? That's not a Ghüder, but a Ghüderli
The picture shows a male and a female great crested newt floating in water near the surface above a leaf-strewn pond bottom.
First sighting of great crested newts (Triturus cristatus) this year!
These cuties have settled into a pond nearby

New post: Can AI Replace Social Science Researchers? (No. No it can't. Come on, now.)

It’s unreal people are ok with it.

i for one am shocked that the "i go in the pool to cool down, why can't my phone?" guy is bad at programming and offloading his job to the anthropic api
At a skill training/workshop-thingy at my university the 'expert' in charge looked at my slides full of historical pictures...
...and told me I should try telling ChatGPT to generate pictures for me "y'know it's more efficient and you could tell it to make it look nicer"
I mean...yeah, that was also my reaction when I heard that.
Refrained from saying anything because that shows such a lack of basic technological literacy that, well, I wouldn't even really know where to start.
"Have you heard about R? Or maybe Excel? Anything?"
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Though there're also a lot of people (inc. historians) who use GenAI/LLMs for all kinds of purposes, because they either don't know how these services function or that there are better alternatives available.
Example: Heard someone talk about how it was possible to make *graphs* with GenAI 🫠
Oh yeah, that one factoid floating around a while ago about how GenAI would replace like 100% of historians was a prime example of that: The people behind that had no idea what historical research is, or, indeed, the point of history & historians in general.
This is a basic and crucial point for any discussion of LLMs’ use in teaching research or writing. Whether it can ape us, fool us, or get facts right or wrong is, in the end, irrelevant. The LLM is not the thinker we are trying to encourage; the LLM is not the writer that we are trying to improve.
i think enthusiastic LLM use is mostly a stack of cognitive biases, unacknowledged plagiarism, and unmet needs in a trenchcoat
but also my main objections aren't about them being bad at tasks so i don't care if you think they've gotten better at it
This is a good response.

Well, apparently not enough according to the GenAI-Boosters!
I also thought that the purpose of research was the creation of new knowledge, but considering how many people seem to think that letting a glorified chatbot do all that...
Oh sure! I mean, it can't actually read anything in any case, but I was still a bit surprised by how quickly & obviously it abandoned the attempt to make an article-pastiche (i. e. copy-paste the original and mix it up a bit).
it's kinda fitting that it made that mistake, because I included that section after encountering a handful of men who reacted to the paper that the article is based on, by basically claiming that any women working must have surely been due to an absence of big burly men.
GenAI ❤️ Patriarchy I guess!
Same here, kind of fascinating to see how & where that stochastic parrot tried & failed.
E.g. it claimed that I had explained something (women doing heavy manual labour in the Alps) with 'a lack of men' - but I dedicated a whole section to hammering the point home that was not at all the case
